30 Easy Healthy Snacks for Kids 2022, Including Ideas for School - Good Housekeeping

Parents, you know it’s true — snack time is any time, when it comes to kids. And you probably also know this other kid truth, which is that just because they liked something yesterday, doesn’t mean that snack will still be acceptable today. Kids are funny like that, so we’re here to save you a few sighs and “what would you like this, time?” by giving you a menu of healthy nutritionist-approved snacks for your kids to choose from.

“Remember that food phases are totally normal, and food is only nutritious if your kids actually eat it,” says Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN, an NYC-based Registered Dietitian, consultant, author of Dressing on the Side (and Other Diet Myths Debunked: 11 Science-Based Ways to Eat More, Stress Less, and Feel Great About Your Body), and host of the podcast On the Side with Jackie London, RD. “Whenever you can, think of whole foods that can help deliver the key nutrients they need during this growth phase called childhood."

Whole foods (or packaged foods made from them) (a.k.a. not products with an ingredient list of words that look like a science experiment) can help ensure your kids’ snack time supports their overall daily nutrition. Just like adults, kids need plenty of protein, carbs and fat for energy, as well as minerals and the alphabet of vitamins for good immunity and cellular growth and function, London adds.

Next time your little one’s tummy starts to rumble, offer them one of these healthy snacks for kids.

Tomatoes and Cheese

Just call them pizza snacks, and your child will probably be on board! Pair grape or cherry tomatoes (or large tomatoes cut into slices or chunks, if that’s how they like to eat them) with part-skim string cheese. “Poppable tomatoes and string cheese are both classic kid faves — cheese packs 5 to 8 grams of protein, which helps keep kids fueled and energized better high-carb snacks that cause blood sugar spikes and then a crash,” London says, and tomatoes deliver important vitamins and antioxidants.

Frozen Fruit Sticks

“Skewer up to three pieces of fresh fruit on a popsicle stick or toothpick, then stick ‘em (and store ‘em) in the freezer. Once frozen, serve with coconut chips or cashews,” says London. “It’s like enjoying a fruit pop!” Frozen fruit works too, just let it thaw a tad before skewering. They’ll get a variety of vitamins and minerals alongside a bit of fat, protein and fiber.

Crunchy Chickpeas

Crisp up some chickpeas in the oven or an air fryer, then sprinkle with your favorite savory or sweet spices. “Roasted pulses like chickpeas are easy to make, tasty, and have protein and fiber to stave off afternoon cravings,” London says. No time to make your own (or just not interested!)? Try Biena for some crunchy yummy.

Trail Mix

If your kid isn’t allergic to nuts and seeds, they make an ideal healthy snack for kids. They deliver fiber, protein and fat — the energy trifecta! Add some dried fruit (look for products with no added sugar) to the mix for added fun and a hint of natural sweetness.

Yogurt

Whether they prefer to spoon it, sip it or suck down a pouch, yogurt is a great healthy snack for kids, however you can get them to eat it. It provides protein, calcium, and a bit of fat. Ideally, look for unsweetened 2% fat options and add your own DIY sweetness with fresh fruit, jelly, or a few chocolate chips, London suggests. “Adding your own sweetness is better than the pre-sweetened versions!”

Sweet Potato Fries

Slice up a sweet potato and throw the sticks in the air fryer or on a sheet pan in the oven to make homemade sweet potato fries. Kids love fries, and these ones are filled with antioxidants like beta-carotene (which gives sweet potatoes their color), vitamins, and fiber.

Celery and Nut Butter

This classic combo can be dipped or smeared (remember when Mom added raisins to create “ants on a log?”), but both options are a good way to get some satiating fiber, fat, and protein. “In a pinch, I’m obsessed with Dandy Celery and Peanut Butter snack packs,” London says.

Veggie-Based Chips

You can air fry pretty much any vegetable to create your own veggie snack that has the fiber and nutrients most packaged ones lack (try frozen corn or peas, too!). But if you’re in a pinch, here are London’s go-to brands that deliver on convenience, flavor, and nutrition: Jackson’s sweet potato kettle chips, Harvest Snaps (made from snap peas), Hippeas (made from chickpeas), PeaTos (made from pulses) or Love Corn (crunchy flavored corn niblets).

Oatmeal

Whole grain goodness, plus protein and fiber make this breakfast staple an equally smart snack for kids. Skip the single serve oatmeal packs (they’re often filled with excess sodium or sugar) and keep a few batches of overnight oats in the fridge for a grab-and-go snack.

Fruit Snacks

If your kid happily accepts a piece of fresh fruit, props to you! But if they’re still in the “I’ll only eat it if I don’t know it’s there” phase, there are plenty of solid packaged options that are made with the whole fruit, so they’ll still get the fiber and vitamins (instead of just blood glucose-spiking sugar). London loves RIND, Pressed by KIND fruit bars, Crispy Green (or any store-brand freeze-dried fruit with no added sugar from Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc.).

Cheese and Crackers

This beloved snack is the kids’ version of adult charcuterie boards, and the pairing happens to make an ideal healthy snack. Look for whole grain crackers or ones made from nuts and seeds to be sure they’re getting some fiber and nutrients instead of just refined white flour, and consider making your life easier by keeping portable or snack size cheese products like Tillamook, string cheese, Babybel or Belgioso on hand.

Popcorn

Surprise! This movie night treat also makes a fabulous healthy snack for kids because it’s loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. Your best bet is to make it yourself (this allows you control over how much salt or butter you use), or you can choose a brand such as SkinnyPop, Pipcorn, Smartfood or Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP. “When you’re looking for a cheese-flavored popcorn, make sure real cheese is listed on the ingredients list,” London says.

Smoothie

“This allows you to stealthily sneak in nutrient-dense ingredients like spinach or chia seeds,” London says. Make them on-demand or blend up a batch of their favorite smoothie medley, pour into ice cube trays, stick a popsicle stick in each, then freeze them so you always have smoothie pops to save the day.

Cottage Cheese

It’s time to make cottage cheese cool again. It’s creamy and satisfying and will give your little ones a healthy hit of protein, calcium, vitamins and a bit of fat. Need a reco? Good Culture tastes amazing, is made from only real ingredients, and contains live and active cultures.

Turkey Roll Up

It’s sandwich vibes in snack form, and we’re here for it. Wrap a slice of deli turkey (kudos if it’s a lower sodium variety) around your kids’ favorite veggies and a slice of cheese, then let them munch away! They’ll get a fun snack filled with protein, vitamins and minerals.

Fruit and Nut Butter

Banana and peanut butter, apple or pear slices and almond butter — you can’t go wrong with a savory-sweet duo. And it delivers the key components of a healthy snack for kids: protein, fiber, fat and a dose of vitamins and minerals, says London.

Hummus and Veggies

It’s never too early to cultivate their love for hummus, and it’s also a nutritious way to make vegetables fun. Alongside their favorite dippers (celery, carrots), try introducing other veggies like bell peppers, cucumber, even radishes or jicama!

Toast

Adults love their brunch toasts, and there’s no reason kids shouldn’t too. In fact, it can make for a great healthy snack. Toast up a slice of whole grain bread, then experiment with toppings: hummus and cucumber slices, cream cheese and tomato, nut butter and blueberries, there are so many good-for-you options!

Eggs

No, we don’t expect you to scramble up cheesy eggs or execute an omelet whenever your child begs for a snack. But hard boiled eggs are an easy option, and you can make them more exciting by halving and sprinkling with a pinch of salt and pepper, everything bagel seasoning or any other spice that they’ll eat. You can even find hard boiled eggs from brands like Vital Farms.

Jicama Fries

You can find whole jicama at the grocery store or pre-sliced jicama sticks. This root vegetable is like a cross between a potato and an apple, and it has a neutral flavor, so your kid will never know they’re dunking a dose of vitamin C, iron, magnesium, B-vitamins into their favorite fry condiment.

Chips and Guac

Yep, you read that right! Your favorite app also makes for a cool healthy snack. “Wholly Guacamole makes single-serve packs, and look for a brand of chips with whole grains or a real vegetable on the ingredient list (plus and oil and salt, and the fewer ingredients the better), like Food Should Taste Good or Siete, made from cassava flour,” London says. Even better — see if your child will dip veggies and chips.

Chicken Sammie

If your kid has decided they’ll only eat chicken, not to fear — rotisserie chicken is here! “I love using a rotisserie chicken in meals and snacks,” says London. “They’re cost efficient, convenient, nutritious, and delicious.” Wrap a few pieces of rotisserie (or leftover) chicken in a piece of lettuce or stuff into a pita with a drizzle of their favorite condiment, and voila! A protein-packed bite.

Pistachios

This tasty nut might not be popular among the kids — yet! Try the pre-shelled snack packs from Wonderful Pistachios, which come in fabulous flavors that the whole family will love. Pistachios boast antioxidants alongside the snack-friendly mix of protein, fiber, and fat.

Pickles

Watch out for the sodium content (some brands are overflowing with it) and opt for dill versus sweet (to avoid added sugars), but the humble pickle makes for a solid healthy snack. Since they’re just cucumbers fermented in vinegar and spices, it’ll taste like a fun treat.

Seaweed Snacks

You’d be surprised how many kids will chow down on crispy seaweed snacks. “They’re crunchy and flavorful while also providing key vitamins and minerals that are important for kids’ growth and overall energy levels" London says. Try gimMe Organic roasted seaweed.

Crispy Lentils

Chickpeas aren’t the only crunchy legume in town. Lentils can also provide stay-full fuel, thanks to their plant-based protein and fiber, and Seapoint Farms Mighty Lil’ Lentils come in yummy flavors.

Tuna + Crackers

If your kid is a tuna lover, pat yourself on the back, then offer it as a healthy snack. When it’s not made with globs of mayo, it makes for a low fat, protein-rich nibble. To cut back on saturated fat, try doing a mix of mayonnaise and low-fat Greek yogurt (or all Greek yogurt, if you can swing it!), and stir in minced veggies like celery, bell pepper, or even carrots for a dose of vitamins. Let them pile it on whole grain crackers or whole wheat pita triangles.

Fruit

It’s not breaking news that a piece of fresh fruit is a great healthy snack, but what’s awesome is that you can now find packaging that “merges convenience with ideal snacking,” which is perfect for on-the-go, says London. POM Wonderful Pom Poms are a cup pomegranate arils to save you the trouble of dismantling a pomegranate yourself, or make a quick fruit salad and store it in single serving food storage containers in the fridge.

Veggies and Dip

There’s nothing wrong with a little crudité, kid-style. It’s a great way to encourage vegetables and it’s easy to prep in a flash. And get this: You can also almost always find a veggie dip snack pack when you’re out and about, such as London’s personal favorite, Taylor Farms snack packs. “These are an all-in-one savior for getting fresh produce involved in any snack on the go, and there are options for any age range!” London says.

Waffles

When in doubt, reach for the universal kid food (OK, adults too!) that they almost never say “no” to — waffles! Opt for a whole grain option with little to no added sugar, then spread with some nut butter and their favorite berries or sliced fruit.

5 Healthy Snacks For Your Kids' Tiffin-Time | TheHealthSite.com - TheHealthSite

Snack time? Here are five healthy snacks for your children

One thing that ties humans and food is taste, and the little ones tend to take this quite seriously because they'll conveniently squeak nooo to anything that doesn't taste great or looks bland. And honestly, as mothers, we understand how puzzling it can get trying to please their taste buds, especially during snack time at school. Due to Covid, we could quickly check on when and what they munched on for the last two years. However, as schools begin to welcome them, it can get tricky with a gazillion unhealthy snacks dangling at every nook and cranny. Nevertheless, we can make things fun for them by getting a little innovative and creative as parents.

Eating Healthy

Unlike adults, paving the way to eating healthy for kids should not be a lifestyle change but rather a difference in their eyes. Whether making the food deliciously colourful or having fun shapes, this ride should evoke a sense of excitement, which will automatically leave them coming for more. Gayatri Chona, Head Nutritionist & Co-founder of Phab, shares five easy hacks to help you get started:

Colourful Mini Idlis

Colours can get any child curious! And well, the wonders of fermented foods never cease. So, blend some spinach to achieve a hulk-ish green and a candy red beetroot, reminding them of maybe the Iron Man. Once done, you can separately add it to the batter. To enhance the nutritional content, you may add pulses like moong dal to the batter and make it protein-rich.

Nut Butter

Almost all kids relish chocolate spreads. Here nut butter is a much healthier and tastier alternative. This can be easily made at home, but it is available in different flavours, such as peanut butter, almond butter, hazelnut, and others. Use it as a dip with roasted breadsticks or apply it to the bread. This spread contains healthy fats and is an excellent energy source! Just note that while purchasing these kinds of butter off the shelf, we should be mindful and read the pack to avoid buying high-sugar and sodium products.

Protein-rich snacks

Protein is an essential macronutrient, as it helps with the body's growth. So, including kid-friendly protein-rich snacks is a great way to keep their nutrition in check. Snacks such as energy bars, protein bombs, protein puffs and cookies make an excellent snacking option. Additionally, they are easy to carry and are a healthier option than typical sugar-coated bars and candies.

Healthy Pancakes

Rarely has a kid ever said no to pancakes. And here's the best way to fulfil their wish and deliver nutrition. Just switch processed flour with oat or millet flour and drizzle organic honey or maple syrup instead of sugary chocolate syrup! Then, to make it a little colourful, you can add blue berries and high in anti-oxidants.

PS: Getting fancy cookie cutters might make things more interesting.

Nuts And Trail Mixes

Trail mixes are the best way to introduce your kids to nuts and seeds! Not only are they deliciously nutritious, but hassle-free. However, it is essential to flip the pack and read the ingredients because often, these mixes are loaded with sugars and sodium.

Conclusion

To conclude, snacking healthy is all about making things deliciously healthy yet interesting. This might seem like a challenging task, but trust me, it gets easier with practice as you understand their palate much better. And thanks to the internet, hacks get home in a click.

Foodio.fit: Snacking takes a healthy turn - The Financial Express

Foodio.fit was incepted as a response to the complete lack of healthy snacking options in the Indian market. As is common knowledge, most snacks are made of unhealthy ingredients and use refined oils and processed sugar. Further, these products come loaded with preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colours, and flavours, all of which can significantly harm the health of the consumers.

Founded in 2020 by Suresh Reddy and Apoorva Gururaj, Foodio.fit’s products meet the nutritional needs of the consumers even as they taste good. The company offers healthy foods with low-carb, high-protein, multigrain, and keto options, with its products including Indian snacks, chocolate, beverages, specialty flours, and vegetable chips.

“Foodio.fit products meet specific dietary needs, including those of low-carb, keto-friendly , and multigrain nutrition. It caters to consumers who want to enjoy the snacking experience without compromising on their health and nutritional requirements,” reveal the two co-founders. For instance, the company has led the way in launching coconut water in its natural form, without added sugar or  artificial flavours.

The Bengaluru-based startup has leveraged technology for delivering superior quality products, using a connected supply chain for sourcing, automated machines for production, and tech-enabled solutions to ship products to its partners and customers. With its entire value-chain connected through the use of technology, Foodio leads the segment in both efficiency and customer satisfaction, says Gururaj.

Within a short span of one and a half years, Foodio.fit has achieved impressive success. “Our numbers speak for themselves. We have 95% 5-Star reviews and operations spanning 50 cities, having delivered more than 100,000 packs so far,” says R eddy.

It has 50 products in its basket at present, with 200 new products in the pipeline. The company has adopted an incremental expansion strategy, guided by its policy of providing first-rate products, and  looks to grow its customer-base by focusing on lean operations, special packaging, and in-house manufacturing.

“Foodio.fit has achieved impressive growth and financial performance from the word go,” says Gururaj. “We are growing at a rate of 25% on a monthly basis.  And the most significant aspect of this performance is the fact that 30% of our customers are repeat buyers,” says Reddy.

The largest chunk of Foodio.fit’s research and development efforts is focussed on finding novel ways to marry health and taste. To that end, the company is synergising its operations across the value chain and aims to come up with integrated facilities that enhance its outsourcing, processing, manufacturing, and retailing capabilities. Also important in this context is

its agenda of launching products at affordable prices in the price-sensitive Indian market. “The future is very bright as  the company seems all set to take the leadership position in the  category of healthy snacks,” say the two co-founders.

Kellogg's debuts new design across snacks range | Article - Packaging Europe

kellogg-26.05

Kellogg’s has launched a new look for its snacks range, resigned in collaboration with Landor & Fitch to affirm brand identity and on-shelf appeal.

According to the companies, an analysis of Kellogg’s share of the breakfast category identified an opportunity for the Kellogg snacking range, which previously demonstrated a lack of brand block on shelves, non-uniformity in its packaging sizes, and a powerbrand-led design that apparently meant it was not standing out as much as it could.

Landor & Fitch therefore worked to develop a new identity for the snack range with a more consistent appearance aimed at increasing presence in the snacking aisles of shops and supermarkets. The brand transformation company says that they developed a more coherent relationship between Kellogg’s masterbrand and powerbrands through a balanced naming and branding hierarchy.

The new design involves a bold crop of the masterbrand Kellogg’s logo sitting at the top of the packaging, with the powerbrands’ assets elevated and centred underneath to ensure strong product representation and recognition, the companies explain. The companies add that while the colour of each product box is set to the powerbrand variant colour, the recognisable red Kellogg’s logo is consistent across each box to offer a coherent look and easier navigation of the portfolio on-shelf.

In addition, on the new packaging, each bar is pictured as ‘ripped open’ to reveal shots of the snack bars within, apparently to demonstrate food appeal and enhance their on-the-go quality while optimising the use of the limited space on the pack. Overall, the companies say the redesign is aimed at emphasising Kellogg’s reputation for on-the-go snacking options.

The roll-out has started across markets including UK & Ireland, Benelux, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and MED. The launch will be highlighted through the Kellogg to Go multibrand campaign across digital, in-store media and socials.

Landor & Fitch previously rebranded Kellogg’s cereals in 2019, which saw it awarded by the Grand Prix Stratégies du Design, Pentawards, and Brand Impact. Kellogg’s has also begun the rollout of accessible cereal boxes featuring a unique on-pack code that consumers with sight loss can scan with a smartphone to access labelling information.

Tristan Macherel, global executive creative director at Landor & Fitch, comments: “Working within Kellogg’s design process, we developed a new and balanced design system for a very complex brand hierarchy across its snacks portfolio. The refresh positions Kellogg as the bold leader in snacking, reclaiming and reinforcing its iconic status while also celebrating each product.

“Our continued collaboration on packaging design with Kellogg is testament to the unique passion and push for the extraordinary from both of our teams, right across Europe. We look forward to seeing the snacks on shelves soon.”

Niamh Cribbin, Europe marketing manager at Kellogg, adds: “We saw the success of our cereal rebrand in 2019 and wanted to bring the learning and results from that into our snack range. We wanted to move from the established designs to make the range more edgy but without losing brand recognition which helps our consumers to spot them on shelf.

“We know people love, connect and engage with our brands and we wanted to make it easier for them to do that, which is why we’ve updated the entire portfolio at once. The exciting, modern design has been tested with consumers with overwhelmingly positive results and I can’t wait to see them take over shelves across Europe.”

Hain Celestial seeking ubiquity in snacks - Food Business News

NEW YORK – The Hain Celestial Group is gaining momentum in the snack segment. Sensible Portions, the company’s largest brand, has grown household penetration 23% versus a year ago and 70% since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the company. But management sees even greater growth in new demographics and geographies.

“None of these brands are ubiquitous,” said Mark L. Schiller, president and chief executive officer, during a May 23 presentation at the Cowen Future of the Consumer: Sustainable Growth for a New Ecosystem Conference. “Even our biggest brand, which is our Sensible Portions Veggie Straws.

“When you think about all the places where people consume snacks or buy snacks — convenience and gas, sandwich shops, etc., we’re not in any of those places. So, there's huge distribution potential despite the fact that brand has grown 70% over the last two years.”

Efforts to achieve growth include innovation to attract more men to the Sensible Portions Veggie Straws brand. Mr. Schiller said the company noticed other snack makers offering hotter, spicier versions of their snack to attract the demographic and Hain Celestial followed them.

“We launched it,” he said. “(It) did about $20 million in the first year, highly incremental to the category, highly incremental to the brand.”

Another new market for snacks is young children.

“We started looking at the platform that we had, which were these light snacks, low in calories, melts in your mouth, and we said, ‘we've got a baby food business, why can’t we do snacks for infants and toddlers,’” Mr. Schiller said. “So, we took the same platform with (a) different seasoning, launched it for a much younger audience — smaller bags, much higher price per ounce, much higher margins — and that was a big part of the turnaround on the Earth's Best business.”

The company later expanded the innovation to its baby food business in Europe.

Once the innovation is in place, Mr. Schiller said another imperative is marketing.

“We do need to invest more in these brands because there is relatively low awareness and relatively low household penetration,” he said. “Job one is to get them on the shelf and make them available, but job two is to make sure once they’re there, they get noticed.”

One market the company does not have any current plans to enter is the US meat alternative category. Hain Celestial has two brands — Yves in Canada and Linda McCartney in the United Kingdom.

“The reason we’re not in plant-based here in the US (is) it’s a very crowded space,” Mr. Schiller said. “We have the No. 1 chilled brand in Canada called Yves. It does very well. We’ve looked at coming to the United States, but there are so many brands in such a crowded space, and we have so much opportunity on the things we already sell here that we deprioritized that in the short term.”

Delicious yet healthy snacks to fulfil your monsoon cravings - Onmanorama

From June to September, the Indian subcontinent experiences the blessed monsoon showers. For a country that's largely dependent on agriculture for its economic growth, the monsoon is a much-awaited season.

Since the month of June and the onset of monsoon is also when most of the schools around the country go on their annual summer break (except in south), it is the time families plan most of their get-togethers and soirees as well.

If we had to name one dish as the most popular one of these gatherings, it would be deep-fried pakoras! Pakoras are essentially vegetable fritters served with green mint and coriander chutney.

However, with the world becoming more and more health-conscious by the minute, the allure of deep-fried pakoras tends to be limited to the family's elders. We may indulge in it once in a season and then try to avoid this sinful dish, primarily due to health and diet restrictions.

If you're wondering what healthy yet uber delicious dish to serve at your next gathering, you needn’t worry. As always, we’ve got you covered! We’ve drawn up a list of lip-smacking non-fried snacks and dishes that all age groups are sure to love, guiltfree.

1. Momos

A dumpling originating from Tibet and Nepal that has swept over the subcontinent's taste buds, momos are one of North India's most loved street foods. But we promise that they taste better when made at home and eaten piping hot! Executing them well, we promise, is a direct ticket to admiration central. Here's what you need to make them:

Ingredients

For the dough:
1 ½ cup of maida (flour)
½ teaspoon of salt
water for kneading
1 tablespoon of oil (plus more for greasing)
For the stuffing:
3 teaspoons of oil
3 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
1 inch of ginger (finely chopped)
2 green chillies (finely chopped)
4 tablespoons of spring onions
1 cup of grated carrot
2 cups of cabbage (finely chopped)
½ teaspoon of crushed pepper
½ teaspoon of salt

Preparation

1. To make the dough combine the maida, salt and oil with water. Knead the dough until the batter stops sticking to your hands. Once ready, set the prepared dough aside.

2. To prepare the stuffing, heat the oil in a pan and sauté the garlic, ginger and chilli for a few minutes. Once fragrant, add in the spring onions and sauté them too.

3. Once they're soft, add in the carrots and cabbage and stir fry them

4. After a minute, add the salt and pepper.

5. Pinch a small ball sized dough and roll it into a thin circle. (You can use a cutter if you have one).

6. Scoop a teaspoon of stuffing onto the rolled circle and form your favourite momo shape by pinching the ends open together.

7. Make 12 pieces for the first batch.

8. Start the steamer and let the water come to a boil. Grease the tray on which you will place the momos, and place 6 momos on each tray.

9. Close the steamer's lid for 5 minutes and then check if the momos are done.

Serve hot with your favourite red chilli-garlic paste.

Note that this is a street-style vegetable dumpling; should you want to serve up different flavours, you can easily do so. Just keep the consistency of the stuffing in mind; anything too runny and the dumpling may burst. Anything to stodgy may not taste good. We have also tried making water chestnut and corn dumplings in this fashion, which turned out delicious!

You can also follow the recipe to make pan-fried momos, but instead of a steamer, use a non-stick pan and its lid to shallow fry and steam the momos simultaneously.

2. Buckwheat Handvo

This healthy twist on the popular Gujarati dish will become a tea-time favourite in your homes! Traditionally prepared with fermented moong dal, Handvo is a soft savoy cake made in a single pot that is served with mint chutney. Here's what you need to make this buckwheat Handvo:

salt to taste
2 teaspoons of oil
½ teaspoon of cumin seeds
½ teaspoon of mustard seeds
1 ½ teaspoon of sesame seeds
½ teaspoon of asafoetida (Hing)

Preparation

1. In a bowl, mix the buckwheat and curd. Cover and keep aside for an hour.

2. After an hour, add the potatoes, ginger, green chillies, coriander and salt and mix them well. Cover and set aside again.

3. Prepare the tempering by heating oil in a small non-stick flat pan and then add the cumin and mustard seeds to it. Once they crackle, add the asafoetida and saute for a few more seconds.

4. Pour the curd batter onto the non-stick pan and spread it evenly. Cover it and allow it to cook for 8 minutes or till the base turns golden brown.

5. Gently flip the side of the handvo to allow it to cook on the next side for another few minutes and turn off the heat.

That’s it…Your handvo is ready to serve and relish!

These uber delicious recipes are a must-try. But should you still miss the classic pakoras with your evening chai, you can also make baked pakoras instead of the classic deep-fried ones… believe us, they taste just as good!

Hope you enjoy making these treats at home. Bon Apetite!
