Weight loss tips: Healthy snacks you can have before and after a workout - Health shots

Listen to this article

Losing weight is not about starving yourself! Instead it is about making some dietary adjustments to make sure you receive proper nourishment at the right time. The best way to do that is by combining exercise with healthy meals. It starts with eating the right foods at the right time. If you are wondering about what to eat before, during and after your workout, we have you covered.

When it comes to having a lean body, it isn’t just the workout that matters but also the meals one takes before and after. What we eat before exercise influences our performance, and what we eat after helps build muscle mass and replenishes the exhausted energy reserves.

Pre workout meal for weight loss

A good meal before a workout can effectively fuel the body with the energy it needs to exercise, without facing gut issues. Without a healthy pre-workout snack, one may get fatigued, which can impact the speed and intensity of your workout. A drop in blood sugar immediately after exercise can also lead to binge-eating.

A pre-workout meal should ideally be balanced, comprising complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. However, the snack you have would also depend on the type, intensity, duration, and time of your workout.

Healthy snacks one can have before their workout include:

  • fruit smoothie (yogurt or almond/soy milk + a cup of any seasonal fruit),
  • an apple or a pear with 1-2 tbsp of nut butters (almond or peanut butter)
  • bowl of greek yogurt topped with with granola and fresh berries
  • handful of nuts mixture with a banana
  • home made granola bar (nuts, seeds, honey/jaggery, and rolled oats)
  • 3-4 rice cakes topped with 2 tbsp of any nut butter
  • small bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter and fruit of your choice.
  • A beetroot salad, juice, or sandwich is a great idea before a workout as it’s rich in nitrates, which are converted into nitric oxide and help improve blood flow to the muscles and stamina. Beetroot is also rich in potassium, which strengthens nerves and balances electrolytes.

The ideal time for consuming a pre-workout meal is thirty minutes to three hours. One may have to experiment to determine their best time.

Post workout meal for weight loss

The body requires a good meal for its recovery after a workout session. One should aim for a quick meal/snack 15-20 minutes after a workout and follow it up with a proper meal two-three hours later.

If you’re aiming for weight maintenance or weight loss, your post-workout meal should consist of complex carbohydrates (such as brown rice, rolled oats, quinoa, and millets) and proteins (such as chicken, fish, tofu, eggs, legumes, lentils, and beans). A combination of these two macro nutrients help in muscle synthesis and revival of the lost glycogen stores in the body. If your post-workout meal is going to be your main meal, then you can have a platter of 150 grams of grilled fish/tofu/chicken with a small portion of brown rice/quinoa and some sauteed vegetables. You can also have an oats and nuts smoothie, chickpeas salad, boiled egg whites, and chicken soup after exercise.

Including whey protein shake after the workout session helps in speedy muscle recovery. Whey protein mixed with water is an easy and ideal post-workout meal as it’s quickly absorbed in the body and works instantly on the damaged muscle fibres.

The presence of more muscle mass in the body allows one to burn more calories even at rest, which can significantly help in weight loss.

Couple Turn Grandma’s Family Recipes into Biz; Make Healthy Fruit Snacks for Kids - The Better India

While visiting his wife Urvashi Srivastava’s ancestral home, Shrey Arora got to taste some of the traditional snacks her nani made. Tangy aam papad, mouth-watering imli candy and yummy munchies made of chana sattu were some of the items she prepared to welcome her granddaughter’s husband to her Lucknow residence.

During this period, Shrey was looking for a food startup idea and his trip to Lucknow proved serendipitous. While savouring these dishes he realised how much the market needed healthy snack options.

“Both me and Urvashi are big-time foodies. But we always take care to make thoughtful eating choices as health comes first. But it’s not very easy to find brands that sell healthy instant food and snacks. Many are coming up claiming that their products are healthy but when we dig up the list of ingredients it proves otherwise,” says Shrey, the co-founder and CEO of Trick or Treat Foods, based in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

The motto of the company is to provide healthy snacking options, especially to kids, and bring back nostalgic candies for adults. “The market is flooded with candies/snacks loaded with sugar, artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and countless other chemicals. Unknowingly, we are consuming so much junk, especially kids, who are exposed to these chemical-laden candies from a young age,” shares Urvashi, the co-founder.

The brand, which was incorporated in February 2022, has the tagline: ‘No Tricks Only Tasty Treats’.

Urvashi and Shrey -- the co founders with the products by Trick or Treat

The duo admit it took them a while to come up with products which were not just healthy but had a decent shelf-life too. And the lockdowns further put a spanner in their plans.

A tribute to grandma

Urvashi, an engineering graduate, was more interested in creative designs and now manages the company’s design department. Shrey, completed both BTech and MBA and worked in the sales and marketing field for more than three years before starting Trick or Treat.

The venture kicked off in the hopes that they could sustain on Urvashi’s family’s traditional recipes. She says, “Nani was so happy when she came to know that we are starting a company that sells her snacks. She’s 78 and can’t travel so much distance but she is the rock of our startup. Her recipes were followed completely, but small changes were to be made as those can’t last long at room temperature. We took help from a food consultant to modify the recipes without changing them.”

It took 45 days and 30 trials for the team to come up with their first product – a fruit roll-up that is now available in six flavours: mango, kacha aam, pineapple, strawberry, pink guava and imli.

“No refined sugar, preservatives, sulphites, colours or artificial flavours are used in its making. Only quality, chemical-free fruits, jaggery and spices are used. In the case of candy roll-ups, lemon juice is the preservative we use which can provide a shelf-life of up to seven months. Manufacturing the candies with less moisture is another method of increasing its shelf-life,” says Shrey.

The fruits used in the making are directly sourced from farmers in South India. The founders say that only export-quality fruits are selected to ensure quality and consistency. The frozen pulp of these fruits (stored at -18 degree celsius) is used in the making of candies.

The company has around 16 full-time employees, engaged in lab activities, processing and dispatching the products. Their products can be purchased directly from the website, social media pages, Amazon or Indiamart. They are also found in certain retail stores around metro cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. “It’s very challenging to convince the retailers. They are reluctant to take in products from new brands,” shares Urvashi.

But the founders are looking to collaborate with brands like “Flipkart, Zomato and Swiggy” to increase their online presence.

Apart from the fruit roll-ups, the brand has introduced Coco Energy Bars whose main ingredient is chana sattu, along with dates and jaggery for sweetness. “Most youngsters and adults are inclined towards energy bars now. We planned to give it a healthy twist by using another recipe from our family. Chana sattu is a protein-rich item, commonly used in Indian kitchens. Almost 85 per cent of this protein bar is made of this ingredient and the remaining 15 per cent is jaggery and dates,” explains Urvashi.

She also adds that the protein bars have become best-sellers. Also, mango and strawberry flavours are customer favourites. “Majority of our buyers are teenagers as well as mothers who try to provide healthy snacking options for their kids and for themselves,” she notes.

“Really loved the sweet and sour flavour of mango roll-up. The packaging is so cute and the taste is better than local aam-papad that’s filled with colours and preservatives,” writes Bhawna, a customer on the website of Trick or Treat.

“It gives us immense joy when customers share their feedback with us. It is touching to know that at least some of them remember their childhood after tasting our products. I even share some of these with my nani who absolutely loves it,” gushes Urvashi.

Middle of a work day? What to snack on at 5 pm - The Indian Express

Please eat that snack and don’t be sad about it. Snacking, believe me, is not the monster it is portrayed to be; rather, the right snacks can provide essential nutrients while also aiding in appetite control. The golden rule for snacking correctly is to always be prepared, incorporate healthy snacks and make them a part of our daily food plan.

If you don’t have something healthy handy, you will obviously grab the first thing that’s around when you want to munch. So plan ahead of time; keep some nuts and some healthy snacks always handy. In fact, stay specially guarded and ready (with the right snacks) for the inevitable 5 pm cravings. After all, the gap between lunch and dinner tends to be long and so can be a danger zone (for eating junk).

Some healthy and fabulous options for this evening zone snacking are mentioned below.

Millet snacks

What’s old is new again. And this is great news. Suddenly all sorts of whole grains with ancient pedigrees are being embraced by home cooks, restaurants and are more widely available in supermarkets. And leading the pack here are millets, which are believed to be rich in calcium, protein and other nutrients. They make for great snack options. Jowar, bajra and ragi-based snacks and smoothies are great options to satisfy mid-meal cravings.

Nuts and seeds

We all love nuts and enjoy eating them. But there are too many myths surrounding this super healthy food. Agreed, most nuts are calorific, but they cause trouble only if you eat too many. In the right portions, they are an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet as they provide good quality protein and good fats that actually help our heart’s health.

Fruits

Fruits are perfect to dig into as they make a perfect snack and help cut cravings too. All fruits make a good snack and sometimes you can fancy them up too by making a fruit chaat or pair them with cheese to make it even more satisfying. Try a cheese and fruit skewer. Cut grapes, apples and pineapple into small equal cubes. Similarly, cut some Cheddar cheese into the same shape and size like the fruits. Slide in the cheese and the fruits into the skewers alternately and enjoy. Other interesting options would be applying peanut butter on apple slices. Dip banana pieces in orange juice, then into one of the following: unsweetened coconut, crushed peanuts, crushed cereal

Pulses

They are a great way to add the much-needed protein in our diet and are extremely versatile. Try the sprouted pulses with Indian garnishes. Take a bowl full of sprouted moong (Green gram), masoor (lentil – Ervum lens) or other lentils. Sprinkle a little chivda or sev on them. Add a pinch of salt. Stir lightly. This is a low-calorie, high-protein snack food, ideal for eating around 4 pm. Or you can have roasted chana with little lemon juice, salt, pepper/chat masala/onion. Dhokla is another good option. It is a fermented food that is very easy to digest, low in calories and delicious too.

Eggs

Eggs are a complete food and pack quite a nutritional punch. They deliver protein that builds and maintains muscles and are super easy to prepare. Boiled eggs are always very handy. Also try masala deviled eggs. Split two hard-boiled eggs, remove and mash the yolks. Add tomato and tobasco sauce, season with salt and pepper and fill the yolk mix in the cavities in the egg white. Meanwhile, in a pan, cook a sauce of chopped onions, tomatoes and ginger garlic paste, season with spices to taste. Then place the deviled eggs in it, cover and cook for 2-3 minutes.

These are enough options to not reach out for the packet of chips. And they sure won’t kill your appetite for dinner.

Vegetarian Snacks for Diwali and Beyond - The New York Times

Sweets, extra-crispy samosas, nachos layered with chutney and more recipes.

The best Diwalis I can remember involved days of epic, back-to-back parties: endless sweets in my aunties’ living rooms; dancing in hot, scratchy new outfits; and cousins racing down the squeaky floors of community-center halls with paper plates stacked high with snacks.

These days, it’s less of a production: I light some candles around the house and buy sweets like kaju katli to share. The tender confection of ghee and finely powdered cashews can be incredibly delicate, almost melting away in your mouth. It’s one of an endless variety of sweets that you can find in South Asian mithai shops this time of year.

My colleague Priya Krishna wrote a wonderful article about how shops are working extra-long days to fuel our momentarily boundless appetites! If you want to try making your own sweets for Diwali, Ashvin Patel shared his recipe for the caramel badam burfi he sells at his shop, Surati Farsan (and the adaptation uses store-bought caramels as a shortcut!). Samantha Seneviratne’s new peanut-butter fudge would also be a great homemade sweet to have on hand if people are dropping by for Diwali — it keeps in the fridge for a whole week.

If you’re looking for some savory snacks, I highly recommend Zainab Shah’s thin, crisp aloo samosas made with store-bought spring roll wrappers, with a side of homemade mint chutney, and a big tray of sheet-pan paneer tikka. And, speaking from experience, Priya’s nachos with Cheddar, black beans and chutney are just as good for celebrating as they are for crashing in front of an episode of “The Good Fight” alone at the end of the workday.

To drink with all of this, I’d prep a batch of nimbu pani in advance (don’t skip the salts!), but wait to blend the mixture with ice until the very last minute, when you want to pour the drinks. And, since I’m not celebrating with my extended family this year, I might consider a glug of gin in that mix, too.

David Malosh for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Hadas Smirnoff.

Andrew Purcell for The New York Times. Food Sylist: Barrett Washburne.

Go to the recipe.

When cooking feels overwhelming — and it really, really does sometimes — I need a gentle recipe to bring me back to the stove. Yewande Komolafe’s new butternut squash soup is exactly that: roasted squash purĂ©ed with vegetable stock and onion and garlic that have softened in a little olive oil, plus a bit of ground ginger, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Yewande uses a touch of rice vinegar and honey to tweak it to taste, either sharpening the soup or sweetening it. It doesn’t need anything more, though some garlicky, wilted greens on buttered toast would be great on the side, if you want to turn it into a bigger meal. In any case, it’s the kind of recipe you can follow just once, and it instantly becomes part of your repertoire. A gift!

Thanks for reading The Veggie, and see you next week.

A hot drink that has captured the minds and hearts of Indians since the dawn of time is tea where for the majority of us, a cup of kadak chai would be necessary for breakfast, mid-meal snacks and the entire day. Snacks that are fried and crunchy, like samosas, kachoris, bonda and pakodas, come to mind when the topic of evening tea or mid-meal nibbling is brought up and people all around the country enjoy these Indian specialties but consuming them frequently can be quite unhealthy.

For Indians, drinking tea in the evening has become a regular ritual since it relieves tension and fatigue from the day. It's time to unwind and spend time with the people you love so, when evening tea time comes around, you can't help but think about samosas and pakoras to go with your tea where you have a strong chance of failing at all of your exercise and health objectives and your craving for fried food will take over.

You might not need to forgo your nighttime snacks, though, as long as you stick to your promise to consume only nutritious foods. Simply improve your decision-making when it is time to choose nutritious snacks.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Prabhu Gandhi Kumar, Founder of TABP Snacks and Beverages, suggested top 5 multigrain snacks to enjoy as an evening meal with tea:

1. Multigrain Idli - Making multigrain idlis is simple. All you need to do is swap out the rice with healthy flours like bajra, ragi and jowar with a bit of whole wheat. Fenugreek seeds, another great food with anti-diabetic qualities, are also used in the dish.

2. Multigrain Murukku - Murukku, a delectable and crispy South Indian snack, is a typical food there. Murukku is a type of deep-fried snack that is created with ragi flour and packed with nutritious ingredients like oats and urad dal before being cooked to perfection.

3. Multigrain Garlic Bread - Let's see your hands, Italian cuisine fans! Here, we offer you a better way to partake of this wildly popular food. A popular choice is chewy multigrain bread that has been oven-toasted and flavoured with tangy garlic and butter.

4. Multigrain Paratha - The recipe for multigrain paratha comes next. You may eat it anytime, whether for breakfast or a mid-meal snack. A delicious, wholesome paratha chock-full of jowar and ragi deliciousness!
