Munchie nation: 7 in 10 Americans make sure to have snacks with them at all times - Study Finds

NEW YORK — Americans are so snack-happy that seven in 10 have a treat with them at all times, according to a new study.

According to a recent poll of 2,000 people, 69 percent admit that they always bring some kind of snack with them when they’re on the go.

At least three times a week, over 51 percent will even fill up on snack food instead of preparing a balanced meal for themselves — but not necessarily healthy ones. In fact, six out of 10 people also confess that their first choice of snack is a sugar or salt-laden one, with the most popular choices being potato chips (56%), chocolate (55%), and candy (45%).

Desire for healthier snacking

SnacksConducted by OnePoll on behalf of Go Raw, researchers also asked respondents about their desire to eat healthier snacks. Over 53 percent would swap out their favorite unhealthy option for a healthier one if there were more options available at a similar price point.

“Healthy snacking shouldn’t be hard — but this data shows that for Americans, snacking isn’t always the healthy option, even though it easily could be,” says Go Raw CEO Tim Prager in a statement.

Respondents shared some pretty clear answers for what they consider healthy. Seven in 10 believe protein is important for maintaining a healthy diet, more than any other nutrient.

High-protein vs. low-carb foods

SnacksAlmost half the poll (45%) believe that plant-based foods can be just as rich in protein as meat-based ones, compared to 21 percent who think the opposite.

However, only 17 percent of respondents deliberately seek out snacks with high levels of protein as a priority when they’re in a rush, instead prioritizing convenience (47%). Although 36 percent believe that high-protein snacks are often more healthy, people were more likely to point to low-carb foods as the healthiest option (38%).

Food allergies are also a concern for many people; almost half of respondents know someone with an intolerance to peanuts (20%), gluten (13%), or tree nuts (12%), and have to watch out for these allergens when they’re buying snacks.

“It might seem hard to find plant-based snacking options, but there are a lot of high-protein, nut-free and even gluten-free options out there if you know what to look for,” adds Prager. “Pumpkin or sunflower seeds are especially great options, as they have high levels of protein and zero allergens.”

Recipe: Craving evening snacks? Try these spiced chocolate hot cross buns

  • Can one really be cross when there are spiced chocolate hot cross buns on the table? Us neither hence, this evening we are not spending ‘one a penny, two a penny’ but whipping up some slightly sweet, light, fluffy and spiced chocolate hot cross buns with the recipe given inside
By Zarafshan Shiraz
UPDATED ON JUL 29, 2021 04:44 PM IST

Prepared without kneading the dough, hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the United Kingdom and are usually made with fruit with a cross marked on the top. These sweet rolls are studded with dry fruits like raisins and currants and lightly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Though it is far from Easter or Good Friday in any corner of the world, the nostalgia of the nursery rhyme with the same name as this traditional dish is enough to set us craving for hot cross buns as an evening snack. Can one really be cross when there are spiced chocolate hot cross buns on the table?

Us neither hence, this evening we are not spending “one a penny, two a penny” but whipping up some slightly sweet, light, fluffy and spiced chocolate hot cross buns with the recipe given below. It makes 1 loaf or 11 buns and serves 8-10 people.

Ingredients for buns:

425g (15oz) strong white flour + extra for dusting

30g (1oz) cocoa powder

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 teaspoon mixed spice

50g (2oz) butter + extra to grease the casserole

6 tablespoons caster sugar

Fine zest of 1 orange

200ml (1/3pint) milk

1 tablespoon dried active yeast

1 large egg - beaten

60g (2½oz) milk chocolate chips

50g (2oz) chopped candied citrus peel

60g (2¼oz) sultanas

Ingredients for crosses:

25g (1oz) strong white plain flour

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

2 tablespoons cold water

Ingredients for glaze:

Juice of 1 orange (around 75ml/ 2½floz)

2 tablespoons honey

Cling film

Piping bag and fine plain nozzle

Method:

Sift the flour, cocoa, salt, and spice into a large warmed bowl. Rub in the butter and stir in 5 tablespoons of the caster sugar and the orange zest. Warm the milk, whisk in the remaining tablespoon of sugar and the dried yeast, and leave for 5 minutes until frothy.

Make a well in centre of the dry ingredients, pour in the frothy yeast mixture and the beaten egg. Work the mixture together using a large spatula until it leaves the sides of the bowl and forms a dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for 5 - 6 minutes until it has become smooth and elastic.

Return the dough to the bowl, cover with some oiled cling film and set to rise in a warm place until doubled in size. This will take around 1 – 1½ hours. Turn the risen dough out onto a floured work surface and knead 2 - 3 times to knock out the air. Flatten the dough out into a large rectangle and sprinkle over the chocolate chips, candied citrus peel and the sultanas.

Knead 2-3 times more to incorporate the chocolate and fruit into the dough. Divide the dough into 11 equal pieces and roll into balls. To ensure all the buns are the same size, weigh the finished dough, divide the figure by 11 then cut and weigh each piece of dough before rolling into a ball.

The dough will be a little over 1kg (2lb 4oz) making the dough balls approximately 95g (3¼oz) each. Grease the casserole with some of the extra butter and lightly dust with flour. Evenly space the dough balls in the casserole, 8 around the outside and 3 in the centre, cover and leave to rise for 1 - 1 ½ hours or until doubled in size.

Warming the casserole before putting in the buns to rise and then placing on the lid will provide a perfect environment for the rising process.10-15 minutes towards the end of the rising process preheat the oven to 200°C/ 400°F/ Gas Mark 6. For fan assisted electric ovens you may need to reduce the temperature by 10-20°C.

For the crosses mix the flour, oil and enough of the water together to make a smooth paste. Place the mixture into a plastic piping bag or small plastic bag, snip 4 - 5mm off the corner and pipe a cross on each bun. Place the casserole into the preheated oven and bake the loaf for 30 - 35 minutes until well risen and lightly browned.

To make the glaze simmer the orange juice and the honey together in a small pan for 3-4 minutes until it has reduced a little and has a sticky texture. Brush the glaze over the hot baked bun loaf and allow to soak in. Serve the bun loaf in the casserole.

Cook’s Notes:

For better baking results always weigh and measure your ingredients. It is worth while investing in a simple oven thermometer and a good set of measuring spoons.

If you do not have a piping bag you can use a small clear plastic bag with the corner cut off or a triangle of baking paper shaped into a cone.

United Airlines will let passengers preorder food and snacks online before flights - The Verge

United Airlines announced a new option for passengers to preorder food, snacks, and beverages online up to five days before their scheduled flight. Orders can be made either on United’s website or through the airline’s mobile app. United claims that it is the “first and only” carrier to allow economy customers this option.

Previously, only premium customers on certain eligible flights could preorder their food and drinks. Now, United is extending the option to all ticket-holders. To start out, only passengers on flights from Chicago to Honolulu; Orange County, CA; Sacramento, CA; and San Diego will be eligible to preorder food and drinks. But by early fall, United says it will extend the option to passengers of all flights over 1,500 miles.

United has been adding amenities and eliminating nuisance fees as a strategy to help attract customers back inside its planes. Last year, the airline permanently eliminated its change fee policy, quickly followed by its main rivals, Delta and American. United also recently added a Bluetooth option for in-flight entertainment. With customer demand still below pre-pandemic levels, the airline industry as a whole is seeking to make flying look safe, stress-free, and, most of all, cheap.

United is billing the food and drink preorder option as a way to improve service, allowing flight attendants to move through the cabins faster and delivering more personalized service to passengers. Preorders are handled through United’s contactless payment system, which the airline also claims is safer for passengers and flight attendants (although evidence suggests that COVID is rarely transmitted through surface contact).

Customers who choose not to preorder their food and drinks can still do so during the flight. But United is urging customers to load their credit card in the app’s digital wallet in order to facilitate contactless payment while on board.

Earlier this year, United announced new food and drink menus for flights over two hours, including alcoholic seltzer brand White Claw.

The Most Popular Junk Foods/Snacks in Iowa and the Midwest - khak.com

What's your favorite food to snack on?

Last Wednesday, July 21st was National Junk Food Day. Normally, this isn't a holiday we would miss, but we were so busy preparing for the Great Jones County Fair that we totally forgot! The good news is that we celebrated all weekend long without even realizing it. SO. MUCH. FAIR. FOOD.

In honor of last week's holiday, the website Zippia decided to figure out the most popular snacks in all 50 states. Think... something you could grab out of a vending machine or at a gas station. The article says, "using Google Trends, we determined which states were the most avid fans of each snack. We examined 45 different favorite snacks, given us a wide range of beloved foods."

According to this data, sweet snacks just narrowly beat out salty snacks for the top spot, which is a little disappointing to me. I'll take chips over candy any day of the week! It looks like the majority of Iowa agrees with me, because our number one snack is Pringles. Not my favorite chip, but hey, at least we didn't get granola bars like Alaska. By the way, did you know that Pringles sells a dill pickle flavor?! I passed them at Hy-Vee the other day and I was tempted to try them.

What about our Midwest neighbors? What were their favorite snacks? Not Pringles (except for Indiana, but they're not technically our neighbor). Here are the winners for surrounding states:

  • Wisconsin - Twix
  • Illinois - Skinny Pop
  • Minnesota - Snickers
  • South Dakota - Milky Way
  • Nebraska - Fritos
  • Missouri - Grandma's Cookies

If I'm looking for a snack in our office vending machine, it's typically Cheez-Its. I LOVE the Cheddar Jack ones, but I'm not picky. I'll take any flavor they've got! What's your favorite snack? Let us know in the comments below!

Peoria Kindness: Family hands out water, snacks to homeless - HOI ABC

PEORIA (HOI) -- A local family is doing their part to help the homeless this summer in Peoria.

It all started when two best friends decided they wanted to make a difference. Along with their four kids -- they decided to take and give out waters and snacks to the homeless.

They've been at it for weeks, but especially during this hot weekend, they wanted to make sure they had cold waters for the community.

"We just plan to touch as many people as we can," JaKayla Johnson said. "Wherever we can. So see a need, fill a need."

Johnson's four young sons helped pass out the water and snacks. Her best friend Eve Bell used to run a charity called "Heart to Heart" and wanted to continue on the mission she started years ago.

"Imagine being out here all day and having nothing but a bottle of water to drink that someone gave you because they cared enough," Bell said. "That's what it's about."

They say they will continue to give out more water, snacks and care packages. Any help or donations are welcome.
Contact Eve Bell or JaKayla Johnson on Facebook for more information.
