If you've been to south India, then you probably know that the region is known for its scrumptious food, especially chutneys and finger foods. Morappam is typically fermented for at least 6 hours (depending on the climate) to produce that distinct slightly sour aroma (which is because of the fermentation). The main ingredients to make this snack are urad dal, rice, chana dal and poha. Let's get started with the complete recipe now. Take a look below.

To begin with, separately soak the raw rice, poha, and dals for 2-3 hours. Grind until smooth, then season. Rest for at least 3-4 hours.

Mix in the curd and set aside for 10 minutes. Make the tempering, then stir it into the batter. If using onions, add them now and mix well. Preheat a paniyaram pan and generously grease it. Spoon the batter into the bulges until 3/4 full. Cook for 2 minutes on low-medium heat, then gently flip and cook until golden brown on all sides.

Immediately serve with Kothamalli Thengai Chutney (Coriander Coconut chutney).

Desi Snacks To Eat With Rum In Winter - Slurrp

Rum and coke are unquestionably one of the best combinations in the world, but when combined with these delectable Indian appetisers, your taste buds will go on a culinary adventure unlike any other. While some of these are really quick and simple to construct, others will require a little more time and work, but the ultimate product will be well worth it.

Tandoori Chicken

Tandoori Chicken is a must-have for any party, and contrary to common opinion, you can prepare it at home even without a grilling oven. Create gashes on the chicken pieces to allow the seasonings to blend properly. Now combine yoghurt, salt, ginger, garlic, turmeric, and red chilli powder in a bowl. Chicken pieces should be marinated in the marinade for 30 to 45 minutes. Heat some oil and butter in a pan before adding the chicken pieces one at a time. Cook each side until it is slightly burned and golden in colour. You can skip this step. Simply heat some charcoal until it turns red, store it in a tiny steel glass, and set it in a bowl. For a smokey flavour, add the chicken pieces to the bowl and cover it for a minute or two. wedges.

This one is for all of you who enjoy seafood. This mouth-watering Bengali snack will instantly melt on your tongue and is impossible to get enough of. Combine onion paste, beaten eggs, ginger-garlic paste, garam masala powder, red chilli powder, salt, and ground black pepper in a bowl. Put the battered prawn pieces in the refrigerator for 30 to 45 minutes to marinate. Bread crumbs and all-purpose flour should be combined in a basin. After coating the prawns with the mixture, place them back in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Once the oil in the pan is heated enough, add the prawn pieces and cook them until they are golden brown and crispy. Serve warm!

Paneer 65

Paneer 65 is a mouthwatering sweet and savoury delicacy. Even after you've downed the full bottle of your preferred beverage, its flavour will still be present. All-purpose flour, cornflour, salt, pepper, red chilli powder, ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder, garam masala powder, and one teaspoon of lemon juice should be combined in a bowl. The paneer pieces will now be deep-fried after being battered. Garlic is diced and cumin seeds are heated in oil on a pan. Add the chopped onions and continue to cook until the onions begin to change colour. It can then be cooked with ketchup, salt, and curry leaves until the sauce thickens. Yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of water should now be combined, added to the mixture, and cooked for 2-3 minutes. Once the gravy starts to dry up, stir in the fried paneer. Lemon juice can be added as a garnish; enjoy.

Chicken keema samosa

Samosas are one snack that, in theory, shouldn't be altered. Aloo should be left alone, but since we're talking about chicken keema, we assume that all meat eaters will concur that this experiment is worthwhile trying. Mix the yoghurt, ginger-garlic paste, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, coriander powder, and mint leaves with the minced chicken in a bowl. Set the mixture aside for 15 to 20 minutes. Onions should be sauteed till golden brown in 4 teaspoons of oil. Cook well after adding the marinated keema and garam masala powder. Let the keema cool once it has been prepared. Now combine all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of oil, and salt in a separate basin. Make a soft dough by adding water and kneading. Make tiny balls out of the dough. Take a ball of dough, roll it into a thin circle, and then split it in half. Now take one half, roll it into a cone shape, stuff it with keema, and seal the opening. With the remaining dough and mixture, repeat the process. They will now be deep-fried in hot oil until crispy and golden brown.

1. Cajun spiced potato chips

Ingredients:

  • 100 gm Potatoes
  • 5 gm Cajun-All Seasoning
  • 200 ml Frying Oil

Method:

1. Slice potatoes thinly (about 1/16”) and place in a large bowl of iced water. Let sit for at least 2 minutes.

2. Drain the potato slices and dry them thoroughly on paper towels. If the potatoes are wet they will splatter and pop.

3. Fry the potato slices in small batches for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

4. Remove the potato slices and drain them on a sheet pan lined with paper towels. Immediately sprinkle Cajun seasoning over the hot chips.

5. Cajun spice potato is ready to serve.

Ingredients:

  • 20 gm Foxnut
  • 20 ml Ghee Or Olive Oil
  • 5 gm Mint Powder
  • 1 gm Chat Masala Powder

1. Heat ghee in a pan and add foxnuts, and dry roast them on very low heat for 2-3 minutes until they are crisp.

2. Add a teaspoon of ghee to the middle of the same pan along with the roasted Foxnuts, add dry mint powder, chat masala powder, and mix everything together well on medium-low flame and roast for another minute and turn off the gas.

  • 10 gm puffed rice
  • 3 gm boiled peeled, finely chopped potato

  • 2 gm finely chopped onion
  • 4 gm finely chopped tomato
  • 4 gm small finely chopped cucumber
  • 5 gm Raw Peanuts
  • 3 ml mint chutney
  • 1 gm coriander leaves

Method:

1. Take a deep glass bowl and add puffed rice, tomato, potato, onion, ginger, cucumber, green chilli, raw peanuts and bhujiya. Mix these ingredients gently with a spoon.

2. When everything is mixed well, add the green chutney and salt. Mix them gently again.

3. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

And the guest Nick Grimshaw expressed his disdain when Matt revealed his fishy food choices. This was a notion of embarrassment as the pair have previously discussed this topic which is the choice of a fish stick on a Radio 1 show food heaven and hell.

Matt revealed more about the exciting tastes that he has. Simultaneously he was talking to the guest and asking him about his eating preferences. When Nick was asked about his idea of food heaven and hell. Further adding to this, he also loves some salty flavours. But producers breached the conversation with the host; Matt Tebbutt made a point of his version of the food hell.

In continuation, long-running TV presenter Matt continued fish stick is a handy snack and pure protein, which is simply delicious. Nick exclaimed that it would be his last preference.

The producers had to stop the conversation, but Matt was stubborn, so Nick declared that using a phone is more legal than a fish stick in a car.

 India’s snacking patterns are ever evolving. The roles played by main course meals vs snacks are reaching the point of intersection. Timing it right, Godrej Yummiez, a brand of ready-to-cook products from Godrej Tyson Foods Ltd (GTFL), undertook a consumer study with the objective to understand the (changing) attitudes & perceptions of Indian consumers when it comes to snacks & snacking. Titled as ‘STTEM – Safety, Technology, Taste, Ease & Mood Uplifter’ – The India Snacking Report (Volume I) by Godrej Yummiez, this report primarily focuses on the attitudes and perceptions towards the frozen snacks.

Commissioned by Godrej Yummiez, this study was conducted by InQognito Insights. The report was released along with the launch of Godrej Yummiez Crispy Potato Starz, a unique star-shaped, crunchy snack, made with choicest potatoes using advanced Individual Quick Freeze (IQF) technology that keeps it fresh for long without any preservatives. The study not only brings in the consumer dynamics of India as a nation but also highlights the nuances of tastes & preferences across geographic zones, age groups, gender, etc.

Commenting on the report, Abhay Parnerkar, Chief Executive Officer, Godrej Tyson Foods Limited (GTFL), said, “What comes out clearly is that going forward, the dynamics that will shape India’s snacking habits will be based on the acronym STTEM – Safety, Technology, Taste, Ease & Mood Uplifter – the five pillars. While taste and ease/convenience have long been the key drivers, safety (hygienic during preparation, storage & delivery, use of preservatives, etc.), technology and as a mood uplifter are turning out to be the three new drivers for snacks.”

This study not only brings in the consumer dynamics of India as a nation but also highlights the nuances of tastes & preferences across geographic zones, age groups, gender, etc. How many times are Indians snacking per day? What are the reasons that influence snack consumption? During what occasions do Indians think of snacking? What are the preferred types of snacks? How do they view the dynamic of safety within snacks? Are preservatives a major concern for people? What could be some of the preservative-free options…and many more!

The key highlights across five pillars (STTEM) are as below:

I. SAFETY – Hygienic Preparation and Use of Preservatives

1. 62% Indians actually limit their snacking consumption because they believe there is presence of preservatives

2. 51% Indians feel less guilty to consume preservative-free frozen snacks

3. 55% parents feel guilty as they feel frozen snacks contain preservatives

4. 52% women will consume more frozen snacks if they are preservative-free

5. 52% Indians prefer frozen snacks as they feel it is more hygienic

II. TECHNOLOGY – Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) Technology

1. 53% Indians could recall they have heard of IQF technology (Delhi and Kolkata ranked amongst the top two cities)

2. 17% could further manage to explain what IQF stands for

3. 60% women recalled IQF technology better as compared to 46% men

III. TASTE – India’s Preference for Potato/Vegetarian Frozen Snacks

1. 73% Indians feel taste is the biggest reason for snacking

2. 62% Indians feel potato-based snacks is an omnipresent part of their snacking platter

3. 65% Indians prefer vegetarian frozen snacks (North India being the leading region)

4. 65% Indians prefer potato-based snacks (potato bites, samosa, cheese bites, etc)

5. 41% consume vegetarian frozen snacks daily

6. 39% East and 38% South India prefer non-vegetarian frozen snacks

7. 61% prefer Indian snacks over other options

8. 43% parents believe children like frozen snacks

IV. EASE – Convenience of Access, Storage, and Preparation

1. 51% believe that frozen snacks are easily available and hence make it easier for consumption

2. 50% Indians believe frozen snacks are convenient to cook

3. 44% Indians believe that frozen snacks is easier to prepare by households without house help

4. 55% Indians prefer frozen snacks on special occasions (parties, weekends, etc)

5. 83% mothers feel frozen snacks are quick-fix hunger solutions for kids

6. 65% Indians confessed to indulging in anytime snacking

7. 76% women snack more often than men

8. 54% working women find snacking convenient for hunger management

9. 52% fathers cook frozen snacks more than mothers

V. MOOD UPLIFTER – Correlation of Emotions to Snacking

1. 55% Indians binge on frozen foods as a mood uplifter on various occasions

2. 72% Indians confessed to snacking when they are happy

3. 74% women snack when they are happy

4. 70% men snack when they are happy

5. 60% women snack when they are sad

6. 52% men snack when they are sad

Speaking on the report, Pritee Chaudhary, IRS, Regional Director, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), West Region said “FSSAI is the nodal regulatory authority which takes note of safety parameters of the Food articles in India. Snacking is one such area where Safety parameters are checked, be it a domestic production or import. Storage conditions for frozen snacks and transfat control in the final product is of the paramount importance. It’s gaining turf in the busy lifestyle and as it satiats pallets. However, responsible snacking is equally important. More emphasis on product development and industry innovation is needed where high fibre, low fat, low salt, low sugar snacks can be provided as an option. And finally a trade off between the health, taste and ease is possible”

Chef Ajay Chopra who was present at the launch of the report, said, “Snacking is an intrinsic part of India’s entity, existence, and future growth story. Especially in the frozen food & snacking category, the importance of standardization and safety is paramount. The potential growth of this sector is exponential due to various changes across social, cultural & economical parameters. The pivotal matrix of STTEM – Safety, Technology, Taste, Ease & Mood Uplifter – will play a key role in a consumer’s decision to consume snacks”

Yogurt's high protein and favourable effects on gut health make it a potential aid in the management of diabetes. It’s song and dance for Nachos and Chips while dhokla and buns bottom out as India chooses its favourite snacks, according to the India snacking report 2022.

These are the findings of a study by Godrej Yummiez across 2,800 consumers in nine cities across India. The objective of the study was to understand the changing attitudes and perceptions of Indian consumers when it comes to snacks and snacking.

The study highlights the nuances of tastes and preferences across geographic zones, age groups, gender and explores the number of times Indians are snacking per day, the underlying reasons that influence snack consumption, the occasions that Indians think of snacking, preferred types of snacks, the dynamics of safety within snacks, are preservatives a major concern for people and so on.

A significant 62 percent of Indians actually limit their snacking consumption because they believe there is presence of preservatives. India’s preference for potato vegetarian snacks came out loud and clear.

An overwhelming 73 percent Indians feel taste is the biggest reason for snacking. About 62 percent feel potato-based snacks are an omnipresent part of their snacking platter that includes potato bites, samosas and so on. About 65 percent Indians prefer vegetarian frozen snacks (North India being the leading region) while an equal number of respondents confessed to indulging in anytime snacking.

The study also revealed the gender divide in snacking. About 76 percent of women snack more often than men. This included 54 percent working women who find snacking convenient for hunger management.

Interestingly, Indians binge on frozen foods as a mood uplifter on various occasions. About 72 percent of respondents confessed to snacking when they are happy.

Only 60 percent of women snack when they are sad, while an even lesser percentage of men (52%) snack when they are sad.

Commenting on the report, Abhay Parnerkar, CEO, Godrej Tyson Foods, said, “The dynamics that will shape India’s snacking habits will be based on safety, technology and as a mood uplifter that are turning out to be the three new drivers for snacks.”

He added, “The definition of what the best-suited snack is for an individual or a household has changed. Palates have changed. Consumers have become more conscious now. Hereon, it will be interesting to watch India’s snacking industry growth story and how.”

Boiled chickpeas

Channa or chickpeas is a staple of the Indian kitchen. According to a research study, the consumption of chickpeas helps to improve post-prandial blood glucose control, suppress appetite, and reduce the quantity of food consumption in the subsequent meal.

In another study, 19 adults who ate a meal made of chickpeas every day for six weeks experienced lower blood sugar and insulin levels than those who ate a meal made of wheat. A study found that yogurt consumption as a part of a healthy diet, may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes in older adults who are healthy and at high cardiovascular risk. When comparing yogurt consumption of 80-125 g/d to no yogurt consumption, there was a 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
