Plans to expand Seabrook's Bradford crisp factory approved - BBC.com

Seabrook factory in BradfordLDRS

A crisp manufacturer has been given approval to expand its factory in its home city.

Seabrook Crisps is growing its site on Duncombe Street, in Bradford, by 4,000 sq m (43,055 sq ft), to provide further warehouse room for preparation and storage.

The firm previously said the existing factory could not meet the demand for its crinkle-cut snacks.

Bradford Council said the move would provide jobs and an economic boost.

A planning application to the local authority said the expansion would also allow the company to "diversify its product portfolio", the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The expansion promises to increase the number of jobs at the site by at least 15, taking the total number of employees in Bradford to 123.

The company was founded in Bradford in 1945, with its snacks now sold in countries including the United Arab Emirates, China, France, Spain and Australia.

Seabrook Crisps Limited was acquired by Japanese snack brand Calbee Inc in 2018 as part of its international growth plans.

Approving the application, planning officers at Bradford Council said: "The proposal is considered to represent a sustainable form of development which would provide economic development and employment opportunities within the district."

Industry seeks clarity on namkeen, snacks amid ambiguity over GST product categorisation - CNBCTV18

The ambiguity in product categorisation when it comes to Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates is causing confusion once again—this time it is snacks and namkeens. The snacks industry is now seeking clarity from the government on the status of namkeen, fryums and snacks after a slew of DGGI notices, sources told CNBC-TV18.

“DGGI has sent notices to industry players seeking GST at 18%. The industry is of the view that namkeen and related snacks should be treated at 12% GST under HSN Code 2106 and the uncooked and unfried snack pellets attract 5% GST,” they added.

The industry is basing its stance on the 2012 Supreme Court ruling in an excise regime-related case between the government and Pepsi Foods Ltd on Kurkure, where the apex court classified it as namkeen. After the Supreme Court order, Pepsi Foods and other industry players have been filing GST under the Namkeen category at 12%.

However, sources say that “DGGI is of a view that select namkeen and snacks such as chips attract 12%, and other namkeen and snacks which are treated as fryums or snacks cooked and involving extrusion process attracts 18% GST.”

This category has products such as Bhujia, Kurkure, Cheetos, select varieties under Bingo etc, which are treated as namkeen, snacks with process of extrusion, thus should be treated at 18%.

The confusion over the GST classification has been an issue for both the government and the industry. The CBIC circular in January 2023 clarified that snack pellets such as fryums etc made after the process of extrusion are to be classified, under HSN Code 1905 and will attract 18% GST. Not just this, another circular issued in August 2023 said that uncooked and unfried snack pellets would attract 5% GST.

Some of the impacted industry players are PepsiCo, Haldirams, ITC, Pratap Snacks, Bhikaji, Bikano, etc.

The key thing to watch out for is what view the government and GST Council take after considering the ongoing industry representation and what happens to the DGGI notices that have been issued.

Experts note ambiguity in this regard and suggest the GST Council to provide adequate clarification as the way forward.

“The endeavour of the GST council and the select committee report for rates was to levy a lower rate for essential products such as food products. The higher rate of 18% for snacks which involves extrusion process leads to disparity in taxing namkeen and snacks. In other words, there is a lack of intelligible differential to impose a higher rate of tax based on an essential process which is required to prepare such snacks”, said Abhishek A Rastogi, founder of Rastogi Chambers, who has argued before the writ court on the differential rate of the product when it leads to arbitrariness.

“Fixation of the tax rate is certainly a policy decision of the legislature. But when such a policy decision is arbitrary, vague, or leads to absurd results, the decision may have to cross the test of constitutional validity”, he added.

"The ready-to-eat food processing industry is one of the fastest-growing in India. Moreover, the industry is very dynamic and has an ever-evolving product line, and thus is subject to varied challenges under GST law, particularly classification. The classification and tax rate of certain processed food items such as namkeen, bhujia, snacks, and similar edible food items have been a contentious issue since the introduction of GST, and multiple changes have also brought in the tax schedule in relation to the same from time to time. The law specifies definite GST rates for namkeen, bhujia, chabena and similar edible preparation (in packaged and labelled form, and otherwise) as well as un-fried/ un-cooked snack pellets; however, there is a lack of clarity as to which all products would get classified under these heads, for instance, chips, packed samosa, mathri etc. Accordingly, the industry has been taking different tax positions in terms of tax rates of such items, keeping in view the recipe, trade parlance, method of preparation, etc., and have thus been subjected to scrutiny by DGGI authorities in the recent past. It is therefore imperative that adequate clarification is provided by the GST council in terms of the classification and rates for the above ready-to-eat food items which shall provide sufficient relief to the industry and settle the debate on this issue," says Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner, EY.

Five Japanese Convenience Store Snacks | Nippon.com - Nippon.com

Food and Drink Society

A short sampling of Japan’s essential konbini snacks.

Japan’s convenience stores are packed with an array of snacks to stave off hunger and help you get through the day. But where to start? Here we introduce five of the country’s best-known treats that offer up a small taste of Japan, whether sweet or savory.

Pocky

Perhaps Japan’s most famous snack of all, Pocky takes its name from the pokkin sound the chocolate-covered biscuit sticks make when snapped. They and their savory sister snacks Pretz even have a dedicated day on November 11; all those ones lined up in 11/11 resemble the tasty sticks.

Black Thunder

Bursting with chocolate, cookies, and personality, Black Thunder is also one of the cheapest snacks in the konbini at ¥35 a bar. Never taking itself too seriously, the brand emphasizes its position at the lower, popular end of the market each Valentine’s Day, while high-class chocolates vie for the spotlight.

Jagarico

Spot the extra-crunchy Jagarico potato sticks as they line up in their section of the store in cups with lids that peel off—look out for the giraffe mascot. Shaped like a French fry, but with the crunch of a potato chip, these light bites have been a hit since their 1990s launch.

Garigari-kun

The distinctive big-mouthed character on the packaging helps these popsicles to stand out in the freezer. Soda is the most common flavor, but the brand has built a name for sometimes eccentric experimentation—scoring a hit with corn potage popsicles in 2012, but flopping with Napolitan spaghetti two years later—and there are many different varieties out there.

Kaki no Tane

Senbei rice cracker fragments flavored with soy sauce and chili pepper combine with peanuts in this popular snack, which takes its name from the former’s resemblance to persimmon (kaki) seeds (tane). A 2019 online poll led manufacturer Kameda Seika to raise the ratio of rice crackers to peanuts from 60:40 to 70:30.

9 Healthy Snacks With Fruit That Are RD-Approved - POPSUGAR

Between creative cottage cheese toppings, frozen yogurt bites, and pumpkin-spiced everything, there's likely no shortage of snack inspo on your social feeds. But according to nutritionists, there is one massively underappreciated snack category: fruit.

"Fruit is a healthy snack ingredient that contains a lot of the nutrients and antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer," says registered dietitian Keri Gans MS, RDN, owner of Keri Gans Nutrition. Flavor now, longevity later!

While a single piece of fruit can make a great snack for people on the go, fruit on its own isn't quite as filling as most people need a snack to be. Why? The sugar content. Natural fruit sugar (known as fructose) is far healthier for you than the sugar found in processed snacks and sweets (typically known as sucrose or glucose), but the sugar content in fruit can still spike your blood sugar, says registered dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN, author of "Read It Before You Eat It."

"When your blood sugar spikes, it also drops, which can make you feel tired and fatigued," Taub-Dix explains, which is the exact opposite of the energizing effect most people are after when snacking.

The trick to making fruit a healthy, satiating snack is to pair the fruit with additional foods. "If you combine the fruit with a healthy fat or protein source, you slow down the speed the body can metabolize the fruit sugar, which helps keep your blood sugar level," she says. And that stands whether you're eating fresh, frozen, freeze-dried, dried, or canned fruit, she says.

With that in mind, we put together the below list of healthy snacks with fruit, each of which pairs fruit with another satiating ingredient (or two). Trust, whether you're looking for a post-workout snack, morning grab-and-go, or midday munch, you'll find a fruit snack option that works with your goals, tastes, and needs.

From curries to jams, snacks and pickles; this book reveals top recipes of KM Mathew - CNBCTV18

To honour the 100th birth anniversary of renowned Kerala culinary expert KM Mathew, a new cookbook titled "Mrs K M Mathew's Finest Recipes" has been released by Penguin's Ebury Press, two decades after her passing in 2003.

In this collection, K M Mathew's daughter, Thangam Mammen, shares over 100 of her mother's timeless recipes. Mathew, a culinary connoisseur, believed in the mantra of "simple good food", and her main desire was to ensure that everyone could savour delectable cuisine. Over the years, she accumulated, discovered, and crafted more than a thousand recipes.

Thangam Mammen reflects on her mother's culinary journey, revealing that KM Mathew embarked on her first cookery column, featuring doughnuts, two years before Thangam was born. This culinary journey began on May 30, 1953, in the pages of the Malayala Manorama newspaper, where Mathew shared her recipe for Goan prawn curry. Initially writing under the name Mrs Annamma Mathew, her popularity surged after she adopted the name Mrs KM Mathew, a change she initiated herself.

Among the recipes featured in the book is "Mutton Bafath", one of Mathew's early creations that first appeared in the cookery columns of Malayala Manorama. Additionally, the book includes the recipe for "New Year Chicken Roast," a dish crafted by Mathew's father, Dr George Philip, with the assistance of his cook, 'Gunner' Unni, who had served in the British Indian Army during World War II.

The cookbook is organised into ten chapters, encompassing a wide range of dishes, from snacks and breakfast to jams, pickles, chutneys, and chutney powders. Thangam Mammen shares that her mother had a profound understanding of diverse flavours of India. While Mathew's parents hailed from Kerala, she was born and raised in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, where her father practiced medicine. Her mother had a fondness for cooking Kerala's Syrian-Christian dishes, while the neighborhood was filled with the aromas of Tamil and Telugu cuisine.

KM Mathew's culinary journey continued as she moved to different places. Her marriage led her to Chikmagalur, where they lived on a coffee estate for a few years, exposing her to Kannadiga delicacies. Later, they relocated to Bombay, where she honed her skills in preparing local, North Indian, and continental dishes.

Throughout her life, Mathew authored 27 cookbooks, becoming a beloved figure who introduced an entire generation to Kerala's culinary culture. She traveled extensively across Kerala, gathering recipes from homes and restaurants, and diligently experimented with dishes until they reached perfection. Her books provided a step-by-step guide to cooking, often serving as treasured gifts for newlyweds.
