Baked beans on toast for dinner, no more snacks: How we are changing our grocery habits to stay afloat - Stuff

People are having to go without some food items in order to make their money last.

People are having to go without some food items in order to make their money last.

Sixty-year-old Louise McGililvray and 30-year-old Jack Alexander have completely different lives at opposite ends of the country.

But one thing they both have in common is they’re struggling to afford food.

Food price inflation is running at the highest rate since 1987 – with an increase in prices of 12.5% from April 2022 to April 2023, according to Stats NZ.

Grocery food prices were up 14%, fruit and vegetables up 22.5%, restaurant meals and ready-to-eat meals up 9%, meat, poultry, and fish prices increased by 9.5% and non-alcoholic beverage prices were up 8%.

Business owner and part-time childcare worker McGililvray lives in Christchurch with her husband and four kids in their 20s, who like many others in that generation can’t afford to move out of home.

The family spends up to $500 a week on groceries for six people – but McGililvray noticed she was sometimes spending up to $600, which had forced her to shop more wisely.

“Significant price rises I noticed were dairy products, eggs and vegetables,” she said.

She started shopping at Pak ‘n Save to lower costs, stopped buying any snacks or convenience food for the household, shifted to buying in bulk, purchasing more home brand items, shopping at local vegetable growers where possible and substituting items in recipes, such as using beans as protein.

And she wasn’t alone.

Angela Clifford, chief executive of Eat New Zealand, shows Frank Film some of Aotearoa’s bounty of fresh produce and asks the question: who is getting access to it?

A survey of more than 2000 people by Tracksuit showed many New Zealand shoppers had changed their spending habits over the past three months in order to stay afloat.

The top three areas where people were cutting spending was groceries (71%), eating out (61%), and clothing (52%).

Those aged 18-34 were most likely to cut back across all three categories, with more than seven in 10 respondents in this age category reporting that they were.

Of those cutting back on groceries half were opting for cheaper grocery alternatives and 23% reduced the amount they bought.

For Aucklander Alexander, this was also the case. He and his partner were saving for their first home and spending up to $170 a week on groceries.

To save money he’d opted to have baked beans on toast one night a week, buying the cheapest fruit and vege and buying home brands.

Produce prices are continuing to rise – with many shoppers looking for alternatives.

Produce prices are continuing to rise – with many shoppers looking for alternatives.

Produce was the biggest wallet-hurter for the couple, who were vegetarian.

“We have cut out avocado completely, if you have avocado in three meals a week you are looking at an extra $40 a week.

“We buy a lot of tinned beans, these are still relatively cheap if you look on the bottom shelf. Tofu from the vege store is also cheap. Comparative to eating meat, vege protein options are a lot cheaper.”

The Tracksuit data also found travel (45%) and healthcare (36%) had taken a spending hit.

Of those reducing travel spend, more than a quarter had stopped spending altogether, while 20% of consumers were opting for cheaper healthcare options.

The top areas where consumers hadn’t changed spending, but did notice a cost increase, were insurance and other financial services (42%) and utilities such as electricity, water and gas (38%).

Kim Jong-Un relapses from diet to hit 22st after 'gorging on foreign snacks and alcohol' - GB News

Kim Jong-Un is said to have succumbed to snacking on foreign snacks and alcohol, as South Korean spies claim the North Korean leader has bounced back up to 22st (140kg).

The supreme leader’s chassis has long been a fascination for foreign observers, with articles in 2020 raving about a trim and "slim Kim" losing three or four stone after an apparent health scare.

South Korea’s National Intelligence (NIS) points to North Korea’s recent hefty imports of Marlboro and Dunhill cigarettes, along with full blooded orders of high-end snacks served with alcoholic beverages, as evidence that Kim is battling once more with alcohol and nicotine tendencies.

Yoo Sang-bum, executive secretary of the parliamentary intelligence committee and lawmaker for South Korea’s ruling People Power Party, also raised an eyebrow at reports of Pyongyang officials "intensely" gathering overseas information for insomnia cures such as the sleeping pill zopiclone.

Sang-bum said: “Based on the fact that North Korean authorities have been actively collecting the latest medical information, including medications such as zolpidem, for the treatment of insomnia in high-ranking officials abroad in April, the NIS estimates chairman Kim is suffering from significant sleep disorders.”

The South Korean official added: “Chairman Kim looked very tired with noticeable dark circles under his eyes during his public appearance on May 16.”

Speaking to members of the press, Sang-bum also raised concerns that crime, suicides and deaths from starvation had all risen under Kim.

The North Korean leader has a history of eschewing health advice in favour of the finer things in life.

The stocky head of state is known to possess a penchant for whisky and cognac, reportedly spending over £24million a year on overseas luxury liquor top ups.

Kim’s kryptonite though, picked up from school days in Switzerland, is Emmental cheese.

In 2014, it was reported that he had consumed so much Emmental that he had to retreat from public view to recover.

That year, Pyongyang officials visited a French dairy farm in an attempt to take back cheese secrets, secure cheese deals for their leader, and attempt to poach Kim’s would-be personal cheesemakers.

So concerned is Kim that foreign intelligence services might pry into his diet that his entourage pack his own portable toilet.

Displaying a common theme, Kim is reportedly a fan of caviar, foie gras, Wagyu beef, sushi and lobster.

In February 2023, he sounded the alarm over agriculture output following reports of food shortages.

Kim Jong-un gains weight again by 'gorging on foreign snacks and alcohol' - The Telegraph

Kim Jong-un has piled on weight after gorging himself on foreign snacks and drinking to excess, South Korean spies believe.

The North Korean leader now weighs over 22 stones (300lbs) and is likely suffering from insomnia, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) told South Korea’s politicians.

There had been signs of dramatic weight loss after an apparent health scare in 2020, which saw Kim’s weight drop to around 18st (250lbs).

North Korea has recently imported large amounts of Marlboro and Dunhill cigarettes, along with high-end snacks traditionally served with alcoholic drinks, evidence, the spies said, that the country’s leader was increasingly struggling with alcohol and nicotine dependency.

North Koreans are also “intensely” gathering overseas medical information for high-ranking officials with insomnia, including details on how to treat it, like the use of sleeping pill zopiclone.

‘Significant sleep disorders’

Yoo Sang-bum, an executive secretary of the parliamentary intelligence committee and lawmaker for South Korea’s ruling People Power Party, shared the details of the NIS briefing with members of the press.

“Based on the fact that North Korean authorities have been actively collecting the latest medical information, including medications such as zolpidem, for the treatment of insomnia in high-ranking officials abroad in April, the NIS estimates chairman Kim is suffering from significant sleep disorders,” he said.

“Chairman Kim looked very tired with noticeable dark circles under his eyes during his public appearance on May 16,” he added.

Mr Yoo also spoke about the worsening plight of North Koreans amid increasing food shortages and a sharp rise in grain prices to the highest levels seen since Kim took power.

He also said that crime, suicides and deaths from starvation had all increased under Kim.

Concerns about Kim’s health, in particular his weight and heavy smoking habit, have long been raised by international observers.

On rare trips abroad, Kim reportedly travels with his own toilets, to prevent foreign intelligence services from analysing his excrement for clues.

He is known to enjoy whiskey and cognac, reportedly spending more than £24 million every year on imports of luxury liqueurs from overseas.

Kim is also known to enjoy fine foods, particularly caviar and cheese.

In 2014, it was reported that he had eaten so much Swiss emmental cheese that he had to retreat from public view to recover.
