4 Healthy, Delicious Snacks Our Editors Swear By - Delish

When it’s your job to test recipes or entire menus (looking at you Julia!), you can easily find yourself surrounded by everything from a tray of fudgy brownies to a pizza corn dog, or three. Though the idea of grazing on freshly baked treats may sound like pure delight, for our editors it can get, well, stale. Unsurprisingly, they prefer simple, healthy, classic snacks that pack in the flavor. (Think freshly popped popcorn sprinkled with Parmesan or a creamy new yogurt from our friends at Tillamook that’s not too sweet or too tart.) These are the four they keep on hand when they’re hankering for a little something that’s not, you know, brownie scraps.

When Tess wants a creamy, flavor-punch, protein hit

“The more time I spend at home, the more creative I get in finding ways to transport myself outside of the apartment…without really transporting myself outside of the apartment. So I find myself carefully choosing my snacks these days to ensure they’re refreshing, nuanced, and taste like something totally new. For me, yogurt is the ultimate weekday snack. It’s creamy, smooth, and rich with possibilities—try sprinkling on chopped nuts and toasted seeds for extra crunch or swirling in olive oil for something a bit more savory.

There are times I really don’t want to put any effort into my snacks, but still want the flavor-punch and protein hit. That’s why I was so excited to hear about Tillamook’s new Creamery Collection.

Still, there are times I really don’t want to put any effort into it at all, but still want the flavor-punch and protein hit. (You get me.) That’s why I was so excited to hear about the introduction of the new Tillamook Creamery Collection: Each yogurt comes with two distinct (yet complementary!) flavors. I’m particularly ready to get my hands on their Northwest Raspberry & Blackberry offering. Those are my two favorite berries to pair with dairy. Raspberry adds a nice tang to the body of the yogurt, but the blackberry holds its own sweet integrity. The combination is almost like a smoothie—one I’d pay a lot for, I might add. A ‘trip’ to the Northwest and one serving filling enough to take me through to lunch without blinking? I don’t need to go anywhere but the fridge…but I wouldn’t be mad to head to Oregon for a Blueberry & Vanilla-filled afternoon either.” -Tess Koman, Digital Director

When June wants a whole damn meal

“Give me a jar of peanut butter—creamy or crunchy, I’m really not that picky—and a bunch of just-ripe, freckled bananas, and you’ve just given me the whole world. I love this snack pairing so much that, in fact, it’s not just a snack to me—it’s a whole damn meal. The smoothness and softness and slight sweetness of the two together make for such a soothing and comforting eating experience that even on my worst days, the various disappointments of life feel that much less devastating after just a bite.

I’ve got all my healthy fats, complex carbs, and plant-based protein bases covered with this treat.

In between endless rounds of recipe testing, most times all I want is raw, natural food with minimal preparation requirements. Unlid the peanut butter jar, peel the banana, grab a spoon, and put the two together in one satisfying bite: This is as easy as it gets. Perfectly simple, nutritious, and delicious, I’ve got all my healthy fats, complex carbs, and plant-based protein bases covered with this treat.” -June Xie, Senior Food Producer

When Julia's craving high-volume, low-calorie creativity

“I don’t snack often—but when I do, I go for popcorn. It’s shareable, versatile (sprinkle some parm on it! add a dash of hot sauce! throw in your favorite candies!) and always fills that sweet-salty craving. It’s high volume, low calorie, and inexpensive, making it the clear winner in my book.

Want to add some garlic seasoning on it? Go for it! How about everything bagel seasoning? Yesss. What about caramel? Now we’re talking!

Yes; there’s nothing better than sitting in a red cushy chair with a bag the size of your head filled to the brim with buttery popcorn while you watch the newest movie—but I’m here to tell you that you deserve that movie popcorn every. Damn. day. The best part about making it at home is getting to add as many toppings as you want with zero judgment. Want to add some garlic seasoning on it? Go for it! How about everything bagel seasoning? Yesss, shake it like no one’s watching. What about caramel? Now we’re talking! I’m here to empower you in all your popcorn snacking journeys ahead—you’ve got this.” -Julia Smith, Director of Video

When Lena’s in the mood to graze... for a week

To avoid stomach aches and uncontrollable bouts of sleepiness, I keep what I call “lazy trail mix” on hand.

“As a recipe developer, I’m surrounded by food pretty much all day long. If I’m not careful, I'll end up eating a giant slice of ice cream cake for lunch, and then grazing on nachos for the rest of the day. To avoid stomach aches and uncontrollable bouts of sleepiness, I keep what I call “lazy trail mix” on hand.

At the beginning of the week, I toast a cup or so of nuts (pecans are my favorite) in my toaster oven. After they cool, I mix them with dried fruit—usually raisins or dried cherries—and a handful of dark chocolate chips. If I have a good salty snack on hand like pretzels or wasabi peas, I’ll throw some of those in too. Kept in a glass jar on my counter, it’s easy to grab a few bites to satisfy my hunger when the latest ultra-creamy dip or over-the-top dessert beckons.” -Lena Abraham, Senior Food Editor
