Boy claims knife attack by senior over snacks row in welfare hostel in Hyderabad - Times of India
The principal approached police on April 26 stating that there was a quarrel between the first year and second year students at the time of snacks distribution at the campus on April 25. “While the evening snack of ‘semiya’ was being distributed by a senior student, a small quantity fell on the hand of a 16-year-old first year student who blurted out ‘orey’ to the senior.
The seniors took objection to the word, but the caretaker pacified the students,” Gachibowli inspector G Suresh said.
Later at 10 pm, a 17-year old second year student chased and beat the first-year student and they were separated by the duty teachers. But at 1. 40am on April 26, the first-year student was found with a cut on his neck while he was sleeping and was taken to a nearby hospital.
“The victim suffered a three-inch cut requiring six stitches,” the inspector said. As the victim claimed that he saw the senior student leaving his hostel room after the alleged assault, police registered a case under section 324 of the IPC. However, during probe the school staff told police that the victim and the accused were in two different buildings and both gates were locked at the time of the incident.
Moreover, immediately after the victim was found assaulted, staff said that they had gone to the senior student’s room and had found him sleeping. Gachibowli police said that they are investigating.

CUTE: Police use snacks to lure pig off of highway - WFLX Fox 29
PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - Police in Oregon want to know if anyone is missing a pet pig.
The Portland Police Bureau is searching for the owner of a pig that was found in traffic early Tuesday morning, according to KPTV.
Just after midnight, an officer was driving when she saw traffic slowing in front of her and appearing to drive around something in the road. The officer then saw the object was a pig.
Other officers came to help and animal control was called. Police said officers worked to contain the pig and keep him safe from passing vehicles.
There were a few short foot pursuits while officers tried to contain the pig. Officers used snacks, including Goldfish crackers and cookies, to keep him calm and contained. Police said the pig was not a fan of nacho cheese Doritos.
Once staff from the On Call Community Rescue for Animals arrived, police said it took several attempts and seven people to safely coral the pig into a crate.
Police are trying to track down the owner of the pig, who will be known as John Doe. If you are the owner or may know who the owner is, please call the shelter directly.

As prices rise, consumers are treating themselves with snacks - Quartz
Inflation hasn’t stopped consumers from treating themselves to Toblerone chocolates and San Pellegrino water.
Mondelez, maker of snacks including Oreo cookies and Cadbury chocolates, reported yesterday that revenue is up over 7% for the first three months ending in March, versus the year before. Last week, Nestle, the biggest food manufacturer in the world, reported that sales grew around 5% in the first three months of this year, compared to the year before. Similarly, Starbucks recently posted higher sales.
Why is that? Consumers turn to treats and snacks during times of economic downturns as a way to indulge when the world feels chaotic and money is tight. Kool-Aid established itself as a brand during the Great Depression because it was an affordable, everyday luxury.
During the pandemic, US shoppers have spent more on sweets—for instance, triple chocolate cookies saw more than 5,000% growth in sales from 2019 to 2021—according to data from Square, a financial services firm. Higher food prices, which were 8.8% (pdf) more expensive in March versus a year ago, haven’t deterred consumers yet.
“In times when money gets really tight…having little indulgences, having little treats that are “necessary” or practical are also important because they make us feel like even if things are bad…we can have a little celebratory something,” said Amy Bentley, a food historian at New York University.
Bentley says that finance gurus who advise boosting savings by cutting back on your daily Starbucks drink, you can increase your savings, miss the point that a latte is a small way to treat yourself.
With the workday still operating as usual during the pandemic—remote or not—these items are stimulants that fuel us through the day, whether as a pick-me-up or to have a calming effect, she adds.
Plus, being stuck more at home, consumers have turned to spending more at the grocery store since they weren’t venturing out to restaurants as much, said David Ortega, an associate professor at Michigan State University who focuses on food marketing and agribusiness management.
Americans spend less of their budget on food than in the past
Mondelez, Nestle, and Starbucks have indicated that more price increases are on the way. But, unlike rent or transportation, Americans spend a lot less of their budgets on food than in the past. Rather than cutting back on food, high prices are pushing consumers to make changes to discretionary spending such as eating out and travel, said Dirk Van de Put, CEO of Mondelez, on a conference call with investors and analysts Tuesday.
Food also remains a non-negotiable necessity and food companies often pass price increases to consumers, primarily, because they have significant market power, said Ortega.
Snacking is now more part of the meal
More broadly, snacking is perhaps becoming a bigger part of the modern diet. “[T]he discretionary part of snacking is, I would argue, that it’s not so discretionary anymore with the modern consumers,” said Van de Put. He said that in China, there has been a big increase in snack biscuits because they have become a dietary staple.
That said, price increases will be felt more by households with tighter budgets. How much higher can prices go before consumers start to cut back on chocolate bars and sparkling water is an open question, particularly as eating out becomes the norm again.

A Restaurant Made Samosa And Other Snacks In Toilet For 30 Years; Authorities Shut It Down - NDTV Food
We inherently expect restaurants to follow the best hygiene and cleanliness practices, which makes our visits comfortable. We would still have some doubts in the back of our minds but would never imagine our food being prepared back in the toilet, and not in the kitchen of the restaurant! So, it was horrifying to find out that an eatery in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, had been preparing samosa and other snacks in its toilet for 30 long years! This news has spread like wildfire on the internet, surprising and shocking whoever reads about it. Thankfully, the restaurant has been asked to shut down its operations.
The local Jeddah Municipality received a tip-off about the unscrupulous practices of the restaurant running from a residential building and raided it only to find out more unsanitary conditions.

According to the Gulf News report, the authorities also discovered that some of the ingredients like meat, cheese and chicken had expired more than two years ago. They also spotted insects and rodents crawling on the site. After a further probe, it was also revealed that the workers had no health cards and were violating residency laws.
This is not the first time the Jeddah Municipality ordered a restaurant to close down. Earlier this year, a video clip showing a rat sitting atop a shawarma skewer at a restaurant was circulated on social media, and the municipality acted swiftly to shut down the famous restaurant.

Back home in India, we have seen many instances when the state authorities took the bold decision of shutting down eateries due to misconduct. An upscale restaurant in Delhi got shut because it refused entry to a saree-clad woman, and the internet applauded the move. Read all about it here.
Such news of unethical actions by restaurants may temporarily deter our faith in the restaurant industry but it is always a relief to know that there are vigil authorities keeping a close check.

Prefer smart snacks while returning to the office
With offices reopening, employees are now gradually getting back to a regular work routine.
With offices reopening, employees are now gradually getting back to a regular work routine. While some dread long commutes and traffic snarls, others are glad to return to physical offices and indulge in much needed social interaction with colleagues over in-person meetings, team lunches, coffee breaks and more! As we prepare for this phased return to pre-pandemic normalcy, nutrition plays a key role in getting our brain and body ready for the daily grind.
Snacking through the day is one of the inevitable aspects of in-office work life. There is an urge to munch constantly, especially when in the company of others or to relieve stress. Unchecked, unhealthy snacking can take a toll on overall health.
Having said that, if you are fond of snacking, you don't need to forgo it. You just need to be smart about your food choices. But how does one find the perfect snack that is healthy but also tasty and can help satiate food cravings? What is the right combination of protein, fats and carbohydrates to fuel one's day? Read on to get started.
Make health a priority
One way of ensuring that you are on top of your diet plan is by indulging in a healthy, timely snack to fuel your body with energy and essential nutrients. Opt for foods like a steamed sprouts salad topped generously with chopped cucumber, cottage cheese and tomatoes. You can also include boiled black chana or beans with a tablespoon of lemon juice. A bowl of yoghurt with raw vegetables is an equally filling and healthy option. Add celery, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes to make the dish delicious and rich in protein and calcium.
Smoothies are another healthy option that will tingle your taste buds and are easy to make. Pick fresh fruits or vegetables such as spinach, amla or cucumber, and add refreshing coconut water to the mix. Add five to six soaked almonds and one or two walnuts for extra protein, and you're good to go. Other light snacks, such as oats, idli or homemade dhokla, ensure that you'll stave off those hunger pangs.
On the post-meal pick-me-up, choose desserts such as custard apple kheer with jaggery (gur) and coconut milk or ragi coconut laddu, which is all ragi flour, coconut, jaggery and crunchy peanuts.
Snack for the right reasons
Snacking is typically more due to habit or carvings rather than hunger. You snack when you are bored, angry, overjoyed or even surrounded by fun, social company. If you do not track your snack intake, it's easy to go overboard. Sure, a bag of chips or a handful of nankeen can seem insignificant as a one-off, but the impact on your health is huge if it becomes a regular feature. Strive to make healthier food choices and eat only when you are truly hungry.
Thoughtful snacking decisions at the workplace can make life healthy and happy. Having the right food available when hunger strikes means you'll be more likely to make a healthy snacking decision, and this is sure to take you a long way!

Better-for-you brands are disrupting the snacks category - Smartbrief
Sign up for Consumer Brands SmartBrief today, free.
While healthier foods and beverages have been trending for several years, these types of products have become even more relevant to consumers since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The snacks industry has long been dominated by legacy brands, but many startups and challenger brands are disrupting the category.
“A key factor is the easy access to information,” said Nick Desai, founder and CEO of pea-based snack brand PeaTos. “The proliferation of the internet and tools like Google have made information on food products and their link to our health and well-being a mainstream topic of discussion which led food companies and regulators to revisit and upgrade their way of thinking.”
As consumers thought more about health, they also found that functional foods and beverages could be used to address specific health concerns and boost overall wellness.
“Innovative food and beverage brands — many of whom were born online — are more holistic lifestyle brands,” said Shaunak Amin, founder and CEO of SnackMagic. The customizable snack and swag service recently launched its consumer packaged goods data insights platform, CPGpulse.
“Taste is always king”
Although consumers are seeking better-for-you snack alternatives, almost no is willing to sacrifice delicious flavors in their new options.
“Taste is always king,” said Amin. “Brands should strike the right balance between marrying good taste with function, innovative brand messaging and sustainability.”
Product taste is also a chief concern for PeaTos, which recently reformulated its line of snacks to be dairy-free, also making the brand entirely vegan.
“PeaTos has always looked to bridge the gap between our desire for tasty and fun snacks with our desire to be better about nutrition, which sometimes seem to be competing interests,” said Desai. “We want to eliminate that trade-off.”
Amin reports that SnackMagic’s CPGpulse data shows that customers are enthusiastic about trying new food products, but most shoppers are still seeking out the most common categories: cookies, confections and savory crunchy brands. He cited the top savory brands, according to the platform, as Kibo Foods, Air Cheese and Love Corn, with Kibo’s chickpea chip as a specific example of an innovative product in an already well-known category.
“It’s important to explore new flavors but have a familiar form factor,” said Amin.
Data insights aid snacks brands
Desai reports that PeaTos has experienced growth during the pandemic, and many new customers have connected with the brand online, which has allowed for more frequent and direct communication. This contact helps the brand continue to deliver products that consumers are seeking.
In order to help meet the needs and desires of snacking shoppers, CPGpulse offers brands – as well as retail buyers and investors – information on several topics, such as first-party commerce performance, reviews and the ability to move product.
“All this combined helps brands use our platform to experiment quickly with new flavors and marketing attributes,” according to Amin.
He added that the company also has the capability to do A/B testing with prototype packaging as well as product testing via its SnackDrop sampling arm, allowing brands to make changes before larger-scale manufacturing and marketing efforts.
“Consumers are turning to their food and drink as fuel to get through their busy lives and brands have taken notice,” said Amin.

Smart snacking tips by health expert, for people returning to office - Hindustan Times
With the Covid-19 lockdowns lifted even as we enter the third year of the coronavirus pandemic, offices are reopening and employees are now gradually getting back to a regular work routine where some dread long commutes and traffic snarls while others are glad to return to physical offices and indulge in much needed social interaction with colleagues over in-person meetings, team lunches, coffee breaks and more. As we prepare for this phased return to pre-pandemic normalcy, nutrition plays a key role in getting our brain and body ready for the daily grind and snacking through the day is just another one of the inevitable aspects of in-office work life.
Given there is an urge to munch constantly, especially when in the company of others or to relieve stress, unchecked and unhealthy snacking takes a toll on many people's overall health. However, Dr Irfan Shaikh, Head Adult Nutrition, Scientific and Medical Affairs at Abbott's Nutrition Business, comforts, “If you are fond of snacking, you don’t need to forgo it. You just need to be smart about your food choices.”
If you are wonder how does one find the perfect snack that is healthy but also tasty and can help satiate food cravings or what is the right combination of protein, fats and carbohydrates to fuel one’s day, Dr Irfan Shaikh advised, “One way of ensuring that you are on top of your diet plan is by indulging a healthy, timely snack to fuel your body with energy and essential nutrients. Opt for foods like a steamed sprouts salad topped generously with chopped cucumber, cottage cheese and tomatoes. You can also include boiled black chana or beans with a tablespoon of lemon juice. A bowl of yogurt with raw vegetables is an equally filling and healthy option. Add celery, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes to make the dish delicious and rich in protein and calcium.”
He added, “Smoothies are another healthy option that will tingle your taste buds and are easy to make. Pick fresh fruits or vegetables, such as spinach, amla or cucumber, and add refreshing coconut water to the mix. Add five to six soaked almonds and one or two walnuts for extra protein, and you're good to go. Other light snacks, such as oats, idli or homemade dhokla, ensure that you'll stave off those hunger pangs. On the post-meal pick-me-up, choose desserts such as custard apple kheer with jaggery (gur) and coconut milk or ragi coconut laddu, which is all ragi flour, coconut, jaggery and crunchy peanuts.”
Highlighting that snacking is typically more due to habit or carvings rather than hunger, Dr Irfan Shaikh pointed out that you snack when you are bored, angry, overjoyed or even surrounded by fun, social company. He said, “If you do not track your snack intake, it's easy to go overboard. Sure, a bag of chips or a handful of namkeen can seem insignificant as a one off but the impact on your health is huge if becomes a regular feature. Strive to make healthier food choices and eat only when you are truly hungry.”
He listed a few tips to note when adding snacks to your meal plan:
1. Control portion sizes to measure your snack intake
2. Plan at least two snacks each day to avoid impulsive snacking
3. Count the nutritional value of your snacks toward your overall diet plan
4. Keep fruits and nuts in your bag for healthy on-the-go snack options
5. Consult your doctor or dietician for snacking suggestions tailored to your condition
6. For a guilt-free way to power through your day, try munching on fresh fruits and vegetables, or even unflavoured popcorn
Thoughtful snacking decisions at workplace can make life healthy and happy. Having the right food available when hunger strikes means you'll be more likely to make a healthy snacking decision and this is sure to take you a long way.

The future of snacking: 2022 to be a year of healthier snacking for Indian consumers - The Financial Express
By Ankit Chona,
Snacking in India is not just something you indulge in when hunger calls; it’s a part of the very Indian culture. And honestly, you can’t cut ties with it, but no matter how delicious and savory they may be, they are one of the reasons why diseases like blood pressure and diabetes come knocking at every Indian’s door. However, several snacking companies are offering delicious healthy alternatives that people love today.
Covid changed consumer behavior
In India, we favor and savor unpackaged food. Until our fast food doesn’t sizzle or isn’t smoking hot, we refuse to buy it. But Covid-19 illuminated the importance of eating healthy and hygienically packed food. With the advent of the global pandemic, consumer behavior changed. Whether it is drinking bitter immunity strengthening concoctions or including a whole lot of protein in our routine, people adapted and adopted it all.
Covid-19 established a new normal wherein making better and healthier choices were the need of the hour. And since then, India has witnessed a flurry of start-ups in the healthy snacking domain. It would be safe to say that the pandemic engulfed the world and left behind a woke and conscious audience. This behavioral shift has resulted in many ditching the traditionally unpackaged oily, salty snacks and has switched to something better and balanced. Healthy snacks such as Protein Bars & Energy Bars, Protein Milkshakes, baked-not-fried chips garnered traction from folks who wanted something nutritious but delicious.
As the urge to be immune grew, the market did too. According to BW Business World, the future for the Food & Beverage industry in the snacking domain seems promising as the market is estimated to cross INR 1 billion. Although many dived in, many are still hesitant to make the switch.
Myths
The word healthy itself connotes people with something bland or boring. And when one hears about healthy snacking, they imagine the worst. Well, today, healthy snacking brands have rolled their sleeves and balanced fitness with flavor to give the market a guilt-free snacking experience. Something as delicious as a chocolate brownie or even a fudge can not only be low-calorie but protein-rich and without processed sugars.
The second-most deterrent to healthy snacking is the price point. Many often think these cost a fortune. However, a few brands are now targeting the masses with affordable pricing and ensuring that the supply chain meets accessibility across India. In fact, today, something as tempting as a chocolate truffle can be bought at the same price as a protein-rich bar or truffle.
Conclusion
As people start treating health sacredly, the future of the healthy snacking industry looks promising. However, it is crucial to know that the customer is much more conscious. Whether it’s about the taste and pricing of the product or using clean ingredients and sustainable packaging, all these factors can either make or break a brand in the snacking industry.
