If you’re into really weird food combinations, you just might be indulging in this sort of snack already
Not all food trends tell you what is in favour on tables across the world; some of them capture the weirdest innovations doing the rounds on social media as well. One of the recent ones is the ‘rat snack’ trend.
So, yes, the name does bring to mind something unpalatable and downright yucky, but it’s not that bad. A ‘rat snack’ is just a term for a snack combo that you eat in secret, probably standing over the sink in the kitchen when everyone else is asleep.

On social media, people have moved on from the chef’s secrets, advanced kitchen techniques and complicated recipes that helped us pass the time when we were homebound during the pandemic lockdowns. Now, you see non-recipe foods being dished out online. TikToker Ken Eurich’s ‘chip soup’ is famous; it’s just chips crushed in a bowl and doused with vinegar. Perhaps TikTok creator and dietician Abbey Sharp can be credited with making ‘rat snacks’ popular. Hers is a snack of slices of apple, brown sugar, butter and walnuts, microwaved together and eaten on toast with cheddar cheese on top.

If your reaction to that food idea was a grimace, it brings us to another aspect of a ‘rat snack’ – for most people, a ‘rat snack’ is something they enjoy as a guilty pleasure when no one else is about.
Here’s how you know if you’ve been indulging already: Your snack must be immediately gratifying, impulsive and uncomplicated. Oh, yes, and not perhaps something you’re going to serve even to your bestie!
