FNB News - Snacks and sweets take a healthy twist as Eat Right Movement gains importance during pandemic | FNB News - fnbnews.com

Snacks and sweets in the country have taken a healthy twist with FSSAI's
Eat Right Movement gaining considerable importance during the pandemic adding a touch of immunity boosting ingredients.

Companies from Haldriram's, MTR, Bikanervala Foods, Anamika to Maakhan Bhog, Chhappan Bhog, Kipps Confectioners, Kaleva India, MKS Foods have begun to not just reduce sodium, sugars and saturated fats but add healthy ingredients such as whole grains, vegetables and micronutrients in its products. It is the same for children's foods as well with several new brands launching healthy products.

One such company is Lil' Goodness."Covid-19 has accelerated some of the health seeking trends, especially those driven by need to improve immunity and reduce unhealthy fat consumption. With families stuck at homes, whether in metros or in smaller towns, the snacking frequency for kids has also gone up. Lockdowns have led to lower physical activity, while calorie intake has increased. Since incomes are constrained, the average value of purchase has gone down," said Pariksha Rao, chief nutrition officer and co-founder, Lil’ Goodness.

There are multiple factors which need to be considered in today’s context
to solve the larger problem of affordable nutrition and snacking. There are
some good options for the 0-3 year age group category, but for the older
kids there are very few options, none at all maybe. The current options
that parents prefer are adult snacks which are used for kids- not the other
way around. Except for milk supplements, most of the products are designed nutritionally for adults, including the traditional namkeens. Are these the best options for kids? No. Can there be something which finds the balance between the taste profile and formats that kids love e.g. chocolates, noodles, chips, while bringing in essential vitamins and minerals? This is a real opportunity that exists.

Snacks are an essential part of a child’s every day diet. The mini meals
that they eat play a crucial role in their overall health. "Over the last
few years, kids snacking landscape has seen a number of changes. A snack is no longer just another bowl of chips or crackers, parents are now more attentive about what their kids consume in the name of snacks," said Aswani Chaitanya, CEO and co-founder, Timios.

Children today have access to packaged food more than ever. A quick stop at the supermarket can result in a number of snack packs that are mostly unhealthy. Currently, there are limited or hardly any options available in the category of healthy age-appropriate packaged food for children.

"Parents often find it difficult to buy trustworthy, wholesome, healthy and
guilt-free snacks that are suitable for children. This was the genesis for
the company. Building a brand for kids involves having a moral
responsibility to do everything right and hence, we believe in being
transparent right from the ingredients used all the way to marketing the
product in the ethical way," added Chaitanya.

Warning labels and limits on sugar, salt and fats in junk food can arrest

the alarming rise in childhood obesity in India, noted experts from AIIMS, Rishikesh; Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

Britannia 5050, India’s leading cracker biscuit, meanwhile, announced its
foray into Salty Snacks with the launch of ‘5050 Potazos’, the 50 Potato
chip 50 biscuit product. The product is a fusion product, which brings
together 2 exciting and loved snacking formats in the country- the potato
chip and the biscuit. The crunchy chatpata flavour of a potato chip
combined with the filling warmth of a biscuit, makes it a perfect entry
under the brand Britannia 50-50. Britannia 5050 Potazos is thin, crispy and delivers the familiar ‘masaledar’ flavours of a potato chip in a biscuit
format. The product has been made to satiate hunger as well as provide a
lip smacking snack experience. In a nationwide consumer survey undertaken by the company in the run up to the launch, the product was rated by consumers as the ‘best new product’ in the snacking space, with 90% consumers giving it a ‘Definitely buy’ rating.

Commenting on the new product launch, Vinay Subramanyam, VP, marketing, Britannia Industries, said, “For almost 30 years, Britannia 5050 has been the brand that has given consumers the best of two experiences in one delectable product. Whether it is our classic Sweet & Salt Biscuits or Maska Chaska, Britannia 50-50 knows best that it takes “two to tango”.

Britannia 50-50 Potazos is a terrific addition to the 50-50 brand and we
believe this product can source from both the biscuits market and the
salted snacks market, which are the largest two categories in food in the
country."

According to Prabhu Gandhikumar, co-founder, TABP Snacks and Beverages, Opportunities outsmart the challenges in this space in India. Packaged food is growing leaps and bounds in India. Movement of rural population is increasing and so is the dependency on packaged food. With an increase in disposable income, food processing is the right space to be in, for now and the future is bright.

Challenges like the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic are a passing cloud.

"However, the concern is about securing the supply chain for a longer term.

This along with managing the supply chain like the logistics of

transporting farm fresh perishable produce to the processing unit, without
any pest attack or even during a natural or man-made catastrophe have
hurdles that need to be mitigated," said Gandhikumar.

Coming back to Lil' Goodness, a kids’ food and nutrition brand transforming how 100 mn kids in India snack- from junk to yummy and healthy. Lil' Goodness is positioned as the 'daily dose of Goodness' for kids and their families through its products which solve two major problems: First is nutritional deficiencies of Vit. B, C, D, Minerals: Zinc, Calcium, Iron, protein deficiency and excess of unhealthy fats and carbs. This affects at least 100 million kids in India. Second is fussy eating behaviour of kids- need variety, change and yummy options whereas parents want healthy.

Harshavardhan, CEO and co-founder, Lil’ Goodness, stated, We have 3 major product lines: Anytime savoury snacks (Multigrain puffs, veggie crackers): made with real veggies, supergrain teff, no trans-fat, no palm oil, no added colours or preservatives. The veggie crackers were launched in May 2020, the multigrain teff puffs were launched in March 2021. Sweet snacks: Prebiotic chocolates. Things you can add to your daily diet e.g. B12 Jaggery, teff grain, etc."

"All our products are designed to bring a daily dose of Goodness micro and macro nutrients through the snacks kids and their families eat. Prebiotic chocolates are the best performers in our category. The recently launched B12 jaggery is the fastest growing. In fact we have a pre-order queue for about 3 weeks, because we went out of stock selling out within 40 days of launch," said Pariksha Rao of Lil' Goodness, on a concluding note.

5 healthy snacks that can help you lose weight

  • Snacking is not always harmful for you. Here are 5 healthy snacks suggested by celebrity nutritionist Ryan Fernando that could curb your cravings for unhealthy food.

Is snacking in between the meals a bad thing or good? This is the frequently asked question that people ask health experts or nutritionists. A lot depends on your motivation, say health studies. If you are genuinely hungry, or consume healthy and small portions of food throughout the day it is not harmful, but if boredom, temptation, emotional eating is your motivation, and you choose packaged food high on saturated fat, salt, or sugar to fulfill the craving, snacking can be the villain of your life.

"Snacking isn't harmful for you as long as you don't eat unhealthy items. Rather it can help you stay fuller for longer and reduce your cravings for unhealthy foods," says celebrity nutritionist Ryan Fernando.

When we are not mindful about our eating choices, we pick the wrong snacks off the shelf, and that could result in weight gain and lead to many health problems. "Most products now say "healthy" on the label but are often high in added sugar and unhealthy fats. Snack options such as chips offer no or little nutritional value but are loaded with fats, sodium and are high in calories," adds Fernando.

ALSO READ: Top reasons you are not losing weight

Why we feel the urge to snack in between the meals?

It could be for a variety of reasons from nutritional deficiencies to genetics.

"This could be because of existing nutritional deficiencies or a lack of certain nutrients in your diet. For example, if you have an urge to snack on chocolate, you may have magnesium deficiency in the body, which can be fulfilled by having nuts, seeds and fruits," says Fernando.

+

"Genetics also plays a major role. You might have a gene that pokes you to eat every now and then. Do your gene test to discover if you have that gene and plan your diet accordingly," he says.

Fernando also suggests 5 healthy snacks that can act as substitute for unhealthy snacks and help you lose weight:

1. Fruit instead of candy or chocolate

Fruits are naturally high in antioxidants, fibre and water content and low in fat, sodium and calorie which helps keep you nourished and feel fuller for longer time. Not to mention who doesn’t love a fresh bowl of fruits.

2. Popcorn instead of chips

Fried chips are full of sodium and empty calories. Instead pop some maize and treat yourself to a delicious low calorie, fibre-rich snack which satisfies your appetite and at the same time adds variety to your diet.

3. Peanut butter toast instead of biscuits

Nut butters are a source of good fats in your diet, that help to maintain good cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure and are also good for your heart health. A teaspoon of peanut butter or almond butter on a multigrain or millet toast makes for a crunchy snack.

4. Cut carrots or cucumber instead of potato fries or wedge

If you are craving for those salty French fries, what your body actually needs is water, so choose high water content foods like cucumber or carrot and cut them up like sticks. Serve them with a hummus or hung curd dip which is a good protein source. These healthy sticks are also rich in fibre, antioxidants thus keeping you nourished and full.

5. Fox Nut or puffed rice and chana instead of Namkeens

Namkeens are another high sodium, high fat, high calorie unhealthy snacks which can be replaced with fox nuts or puffed rice and chana mixture. As they are rich in fibre, they will keep you full. Along with that they are also a good source of nutrients like iron, magnesium, zinc which keep you energised.

The repercussions of doing a crime in any country are severe punishments which include going to prison. Now everyone knows how going to prison is pretty much the worst punishment one can face for their crimes.

Success in snacks requires agility and differentiation | 2021-08-26 - Food Business News

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Sally Lyons Wyatt doesn’t waste any time when she has a chance to lay out the snacking trends, data and advice to a crowd of snack manufacturers.

“If you take anything away from this presentation, it would be agility and differentiation,” the Information Resources, Inc. (IRI) executive vice president and practice leader said at the top of her talk at SNAXPO21, held Aug. 22-24. “If you are able to do that in this environment, you will find incremental growth.”

The good news for the industry is that consumers are snacking more than ever, especially millennials and Gen Z. Ms. Lyons Wyatt is predicting that the snack category will grow 3% to 4% in 2021, which she said was likely a very conservative estimate.

“Snacking is showing positive growth versus last year,” she said. “And last year was phenomenal with 10% total omni growth. Very healthy, very positive story.”

She emphasized the need to meet consumers where they are. With people stuck at home from work and school in 2020, they bought larger sizes of snacks since they weren’t as mobile.

Some have returned to the office, while others are still at home. And a hybrid working model has emerged, with employees in the office a couple of days each week and at home the rest. This means manufacturers need to be flexible enough to provide both larger and smaller sizes to accommodate this variety of consumer needs.

Sally Lyons Wyatt“We have more work-from-home meal occasions than ever before,” she said. “There will be roughly 33 million lunch and breakfast occasions at home.”

And Ms. Lyons Wyatt said that, while most consumers are buying indulgent snacks, she was finding nuances in preferences for urban, suburban and rural consumers. This provides opportunities for snack makers to personalize messages and inventory depending on location.

“Urban consumers were upticking on healthier snacks," she said. "Suburban was more nutritional, and rural was all about indulgence."

In fact, indulgent snacks continue to gain ground over snacks that are a bit healthier.

“Prior to the pandemic, permissible indulgence was winning,” Ms. Lyons Wyatt said. “In the pandemic we all heard about nostalgia, people who were looking for comfort food and comfort snacks, and we saw an uptick in true indulgence. But true indulgence has gained yet again and is now sitting at 33% share. It was roughly at 28% back in 2019.”

Messaging around sustainable business practices is a good way to draw the interest of younger snackers who are passionate about the subject, she said. And everyone just wants to have a little fun through innovation or experiences.

“Sixty-seven percent of consumers want snacks that are fun to eat; up three points in two years,” Ms. Lyons Wyatt said. “Fifty-two percent of consumers like to eat snacks that add excitement to their daily diet. That’s up three points in two years. Fifty-one percent of consumers look for authentic or unique snack experiences, up seven points in two years.”

Brands don’t even need new products to create that excitement, she explained. It can be done through social media, packaging and more. QR codes on snack packages could be used to provide fans with more information, too.

The snack industry has seen a lot of growth in the last year and a half and capitalizing on some of these trends could help propel the industry further.

Caught on video: Gangsters enjoying liquor, snacks inside police lock-up - The Indian Express

A video has come to light purportedly showing brothers Rahul Kala and Naveen Bali, associates of jailed gangster Neeraj Bawana, sitting inside a lock-up and enjoying liquor and snacks. The two were in Mandoli Jail before they were re-arrested on August 5 in connection with a separate case, and were taken on police remand by the Special Cell till August 10, before returning to jail.

Police did not say confirm whether the video is from the Special Cell office or Mandoli jail.

The 24-second video purportedly shows four men sitting inside the police lock-up with Rahul and Naveen and consuming liquor, chips and other food items. The men are seen sitting on a mattress, and also seen talking on the phone and smoking. Two persons can purportedly be seen sitting outside the lock-up.

When contacted, DG (Tihar jail) Sandeep Goel said, “We will look into it.”

Delhi Police spokesperson, Chinmoy Biswal said, “The video is not substantiated and liquor is not served in police lock-up.”

An FIR under charges of criminal conspiracy had been lodged by the New Delhi Range of Special Cell after they intercepted phone calls wherein Rahul and Naveen were allegedly hatching a conspiracy to eliminate a rival currently lodged in Rohini jail.

“After collecting technical evidence against them, police started an investigation. The two men were re-arrested from Mandoli jail, where they were lodged, and taken to the Special Cell office. They returned to Mandoli jail on August 10. One of their associates, Sahil alias Chintu, was also re-arrested from Rohini jail,” said a senior police officer.

The officer said both brothers work for Neeraj and would make extortion calls from inside jail. Rahul was arrested in 2014 when he along with his associate Ravi had allegedly killed two brothers following an incident of road rage in Sultanpur Dabas village of Bawana in Outer Delhi. He was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh.

Ever evolving snacks industry in India: Opportunities & challenges | FNB News - fnbnews.com

Over the years, India has become one of the fastest growing economies in the world. With rising urbanisation, changing consumption patterns and a huge domestic market to cater to, opportunities for various products and their respective markets have been on the rise.

Consequently, the younger lot that makes up for almost two thirds of India’s population, have created a market for snack products.

The Indian snacks and confectionary products cover flavourful sweet and salty food items sold over the counter. They include snack items such as Namkeen, potato chips, tortilla chips, crackers, as well as bakery items such as preserved biscuits, pastries, cakes.

Opportunities and Challenges pertaining to the Indian snacks industry.

  • ?    Since the 1990s, the snacks market has come a long way. The industry was majorly dominated by snack giants and a handful of regional brands. Innovations have always been key in the Indian snack industry. The snack players are always surprising and delighting their customers with amazing and unique taste offerings. The new flavours are inspired by the diversified food culture of our country.
  • There have been major improvements in the manufacturing, processing, distribution and marketing processes of snack products. This has made packaged snack products quite popular amongst the Indian consumers.
  • Since 2019, the savory snacks market in India has shown an increasing trend. In 2020, the snacks market value in India was about $5.57 billion and is expected to reach almost $13 billion by 2026.
  • Traditionally, Indian families like to prepare snacks at home to eat between meals or during travelling. However, with increasing per capita income, higher disposable incomes and need for convenience on account of the fast-paced lifestyles, the demand for ready to eat, on-the-go snacks has increased.
  • Hectic schedules are making it tough for people to maintain the right work-life balance. As people switched to Work From Home during the Covid-19 lockdowns, they have developed the habit of munching while working.
  • Also, due to an increase in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and heart ailments, many have started opting for healthy snacking. Now customers want to purchase products that are not only tasty and convenient to procure, but nutritious as well. The changing patterns and trends have led to a rise in the demand for responsible and ethical food processing.
  • The Indian snacking and confectionary industry is going through a remarkable growth cycle as many domestic as well as multinational companies are looking to establish their presence within the market.
  • Growing FDI and collaborations in the industry are only going to speed up the process. The numbers indicate that the segment has a huge growth potential and will add immensely to the development of the Indian economy.
However, with opportunities, come challenges. The snack and confectionery industry is also facing some issues in terms of lack of storage infrastructure, low availability of raw materials for certain seasonal crops and poor connectivity of certain rural areas with food processing units situated far. This results in a lot of wastage.

There is an urgent need to incorporate the latest technologies in order to keep up the quality of produce and enable farmers to compete in the global market. When it comes to branded and traditional snack products, regional preferences also play a role.

The competition in the snack market is about to become fierce as we can expect a whole range of activities pertaining to innovations in products and tastes, consumer convenience, as well as the entry of new players along the years.

The trick will lie in maintaining the good taste of the product regardless of the technological innovations though. People don’t want healthy food at the expense of good taste.

Also, the trend of snacking came from the West, however, the Indian touch is a must and constant in the available varieties. The manufacturers will have to find the right balance and cater as per the rising demands.

Lastly, for snacks, the quality standards laid by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), must be followed by the industry players. Different government policies that have been put together for the food processing sector such as tax benefits, FDI, and export promotions are applicable on the snack industry as well.

Brands and start-ups breathing in the Industry
Given the global outreach and the potential of the industry, a lot of brands in their early days made a name for themselves in the market. The brands have not only achieved local but global footprint as well.

The entire market is growing at 10-12%, with the branded segment covering about 30% of this market, growing at 25% per annum. With the use of better shelf life and automation, the segment is set to expand even further.

The major players in the Indian snack segment are Haldiram’s, Bikanerwala, Pepsico India, Balaji Wafers, DFM Foods and Prataap Snacks (Yellow Diamond), among others.

The major players in the Indian confectionery segment are Parle Agro, Nestle SA, ITC, Ferrero, Amul, Naturell India, Mars, Lotte.

The entire namkeen segment is broadly categorised into 3 segments. The first one is traditional, covering about 60-65% of the market and comprises traditional Indian wafers. The second type is a little more western.

There’s also an emerging hybrid type called ‘bridge snacks', which has a local taste but a western look.

There are other variations as well called the healthy-snacks category with brands like ‘The Green snack co' looking to make a name for themselves.

Taking into account the opportunities and challenges, we can safely assume that the snacks and confectionery market will attract diverse players, tastes, and products, for years to come.

We often don't realize that mismanaged eating habits have a larger role to play in deteriorating health conditions more often than ever. This makes smart snacks an ideal intervention in the sedentary daily activities, which not only exudes multiple health benefits but sets the tone for a wellness pattern in long term.

Some of the characteristics which differentiate a regular snack from a smart snack are first of all the core ingredients, the nutritional value each ingredient supplies and contributes to the final product keeps a check on the calories, sugar, and cholesterol levels, and of course last but not the least does not get boring. While the consumers' shift from salty, tangy, and oily snacks towards healthy snacks has been monumental, the only aspect which can retain them is variety in taste.

Also, the kind of oil used to prepare the snack highly dominates the health quotient of the snack.
